Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa 2006 - Pole for Fabris in qualifying at Spa

The fifth round of the Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa is being held this weekend on the Belgian circuit of Spa- Francorchamps. Qualifying was held today, Friday 28 July. Pole position was claimed by Maurizio Fabris, leader of the Maserati single-make series. His time of 2'37"934 saw off the challenge of the young crew formed by Niccolò Oddi-Giacomo Ricci (2'37"981) and that of Andrea Demegni at the wheel of the Pakelo VIP car (2'38"284). For Fabris it is the first pole of the season. His performance could easily translate into a race win, one that he triumphed in last year. However, Oddi is not to be underestimated in his debut at Spa. Ricci is also turning out here for the first time in a 'covered wheel' race. 
Second among the VIP cars was Gianmarino Zenere (Isoclima, tenth overall). Then came Jean Claude Andruet-Philippe Liechti (Audemars Piguet), Marc Goossens-Frank Boulat (Toora), Jean Coulomb- Chris Wauters (Maserati West Europe) and Jodie Kidd-Jamie-Constable (Maserati UK). Qualifying was held in the rain for the second half of the 45 minute session, meaning that the fast times were set in session one. The sixty minute will be held tomorrow, Saturday 29 July, at 10.20.
