At the end of the three qualifying sessions, the starting grid for the challenging 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps has been established. The classic Belgian endurance race will begin tomorrow, Saturday 29 July, at 16.00. The event is the fourth round of the FIA GT championship. The Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati MC12s will begin from rows one and two, places assured thanks to Vincent Vosse-Jamie Davies-Thomas Biagi setting the second fastest time and Eric Van de Poele-Michael Bartels-Andrea Bertolini the third. Englishman Davies was responsible for the quickest lap of 2'14"952, only 81 thousandths off pole. Up front are Lemeret-Deletraz-Piccini-Fassler in the Aston Martin DBR9 (2'14"871). Meanwhile, German Bartels stopped the clock at 2'15"082. All the fast times were set in yesterday's (Friday 27 July) first session. Today's third session, following the second held during the night, was run with the cars featuring their race set up, an ideal preparation for the 24 Hour.
The aim was not an all-out thrust for pole but rather to test the reliability of the car ahead of the endurance race. The hope is that the Maserati MC12s can repeat last year's display when Van Poele-Bartels-Scheider and Bertolini-Wendlinger-Peter scored a wonderful one-two.
"The weekend began well", confirmed Davies. "It is continuing well. Our performances are in line with expectations and everything is going to plan. The only unknown is the weather and rain is always a threat".
