Over a third of Brits would prefer to holiday in the UK rather than abroad, with the Southwest being the most popular destination, according to the latest research from Vauxhall*.
Stunning coastlines, shorter travel times, and avoiding the airport experience all ranked in the top five things people enjoy the most about a ‘staycation’. Supporting the local economy, the beautiful green countryside, and taking scenic drives also featured in the top 30 reasons.
The study also found 62% think the best type of ’staycation’ is a coastal getaway, but 50% also love a city break, and 28% enjoy camping or glamping. The Southwest of England is considered the best place to get away for 21% of people surveyed, followed by Scotland (15%) and Wales (11%).
It also emerged that those polled are willing to spend an average of £391.11 per trip, with 50% reporting that rising travel costs have made them more likely to holiday within the British borders.
Unsurprisingly, 78% of Brits felt that the weather could make or break a holiday in the UK. For those colder days, the Vauxhall Grandland Electric is available with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a heated windscreen, and for when the sun comes out, an optional panoramic sunroof is also available.
The car was by far the dominant mode of transport for Brits going on holiday in the UK, with 80% choosing it as their preferred method of transport. The research also revealed that nearly nine out of 10 enjoy taking scenic drives whilst on holiday in the UK, rediscovering incredible landscapes at home through the comfort of their car.
Brits didn’t have an issue with travelling for UK trips either, with the average person travelling just under 206 miles – well within the 323-mile range (WLTP) of the Vauxhall Grandland Electric.
Eurig Druce, Vauxhall Managing Director and Stellantis UK Group Managing Director, said: “The UK is such a wonderful place to holiday, and it's been great finding out why people love it so much. Everyone has memories of holidaying in the UK from their childhood, and more than ever, Brits are choosing ‘staycations’ over going abroad, whether that be because of the beautiful scenery on our doorstep or the comfort of travelling in your own car.
“The Vauxhall Grandland Electric has been designed with families in mind, with a spacious interior, large boot and an electric range of over 300 miles, making it the ideal vehicle for a ‘staycation’. Whether it is stunning coastlines, rural escapes, or bustling city centres, the home nations have some fantastic places on offer for people to enjoy.”
The research also found 15% have been asked by their children to be more environmentally friendly when planning their trips, and one in 10 (9%) said sustainability is a priority for them when booking. And of the electric vehicle drivers polled, 77% said having charging points at their accommodation is important.
The Vauxhall Grandland Electric has been designed with families in mind, not only offering an impressive range from its 73kWh battery, but also space, comfort and innovative technology, all for less than £40,000. It can be charged from 20-80% in as little as 26 minutes from a 160kW DC rapid charger, the perfect time for a quick pit-stop during a family road trip.
Over half of survey respondents highlighted comfortable seats as the most important feature to have in their car when going on a staycation. Every version of the Grandland features Vauxhall’s ergonomic Intelli-Seat feature – a special depression in the middle of the seat that reduces pressure on the tailbone, increasing comfort for the driver and front passenger.
Making up the rest of the top five features were a large boot (41%), good electric range/fuel economy (38%), satellite navigation (35%), and a spacious cabin (19%). The Vauxhall Grandland comes equipped with a multimedia infotainment system featuring a 16-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto™ and satellite navigation from GS trim, as well as a 550-litre boot (rising to 1,645 litres with the rear seats folded), and more than 35 litres of interior storage compartments, offering plenty of space for the whole family’s luggage.

ABOUT VAUXHALL MOTORS
Vauxhall Motors started making cars in the UK in 1903. Today, as the oldest and most familiar of Britain’s automotive manufacturers, its philosophy is to build vehicles that are relevant to all and offer design, high levels of equipment and technology, and electrification at an attainable level. Vauxhall is one of few automotive brands to produce electric vehicles in Britain at its manufacturing plant in Ellesmere Port – the UK’s first electric-only manufacturing plant where the Combo Electric van is made. Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain campaign raises the profile of the need for more on-street electric vehicle charging so that everyone can benefit from the switch to electric. Vauxhall is proud to be the official automotive partner of Team GB. The partnership sees Britain's most loved sports team and one of Britain’s most recognisable automotive brands joining forces, with Vauxhall supporting athletes as they prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Vauxhall is part of Stellantis NV, a global leader created for the new era of sustainable mobility as a result of the merger between Groupe PSA and FCA Group in January 2021. Vauxhall is a leader in electrification – as of 2021, it was one of the first manufacturers to offer fully electric versions of all its vans.
