PEUGEOT INTRODUCES NEW 48V HYBRID POWERTRAIN TO 3008 AND 5008

PEUGEOT has announced a new 48V HYBRID powertrain for the 3008 and 5008. The new powertrain complements the existing PEUGEOT electrified range, and couples a 136hp PureTech petrol engine with a 6-speed dual-clutch electrified gearbox that features an integrated electric motor which helps reduce fuel consumption by 15%.

This new powertrain takes the place of the PureTech 130 EAT8 offering and will soon be available on other models in the PEUGEOT range, including 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW, and new 408. PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 models are first to benefit from the new HYBRID powertrain with first customer deliveries taking place in Summer 2023.

During everyday driving the combustion and electric motors can run concurrently or separately to maximise efficiency with drivers being notified via the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® of which power source is in use. When the battery charge allows it, the HYBRID system makes it possible to start, manoeuvre and drive at low speed in heavy traffic in 100% electric mode. In urban driving, the PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 HYBRID can be driven more than half of the time in 100% zero-emission electric mode.

The new 48V HYBRID powertrain results in a drop in fuel consumption of 15% with these savings mostly being achieved during urban driving, while motorway efficiency remains unchanged. When the car is decelerating, the petrol motor shuts off completely, allowing the electric motor to generate energy to recharge the battery.

At higher speeds the combustion engine stops when the driver releases the accelerator pedal at a steady speed and when slowing down. When the engine is under high load, such as during overtaking, the electric motor provides additional torque with a one-off boost that compensates for the turbo's response time. This will avoid downshifts and provides more driving comfort and dynamism. When the driver presses the accelerator fully, the electric engine provides an additional 9 kW (approx. 12 hp) of power.

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE 48V HYBRID SYSTEM

All aspects of the hybrid system are located under the bonnet, except for the 48V battery, which is installed under the front left seat of PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008.

The 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine is a new generation of PureTech engines specially developed for optimal integration with hybridisation. Featuring a variable geometry turbo and Miller cycle operation*, it produces 136hp and 230Nm of torque.

The PEUGEOT 48V HYBRID engine includes a new electrified 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (e-DCS6 Dual Clutch System) without torque break specially designed for hybrid systems. The gearbox also houses the electric motor, the inverter and the ECU, which optimises the size and weight of the vehicle to improve driving performance.

The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, built into the gearbox, develops a peak power of 21kW (28hp) and a torque of 55Nm. It allows the vehicle to be driven 100% electrically for low torque requirements and assists the combustion engine to reduce consumption. During deceleration, the engine acts as a generator to recharge the HYBRID system's 48V battery and provides the main start for the combustion engine with the assistance of the belt-starter. The 48V-powered starter ensures that the combustion engine is restarted via the accessory belt allowing fast, seamless starts.

The 48V Lithium-Ion battery is installed under the front left seat to ensure the full boot volume is maintained. It has a gross capacity of 898Wh and an available capacity of 432Wh. It is designed to maintain the same level of performance throughout the life of the vehicle and comes with an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty.

The PEUGEOT 3008 and 5008 embed two electrical networks. A low voltage 12V network to supply the car's equipment and a high voltage 48V network to supply the HYBRID system. Electricity is produced solely by the 48V e-motor. A DC voltage converter is used to transfer the electricity produced to the car's 12V network.

PEUGEOT models equipped with the new HYBRID powertrain have a specific display embedded into i-Cockpit.® The digital display shows 100% electric driving (speedometer in blue), the flow of energy in the system, the battery charge level, its operating status via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power) and the percentage of distance travelled in electric mode at any one time or at the end of the journey.

In addition, these models will be equipped with an AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) which emits a sound outside at up to 18mph to warn pedestrians and cyclists that the vehicle is approaching.

The new HYBRID powertrain fulfils PEUGEOT’s commitment to have a fully electrified range in 2023. By 2025, PEUGEOT will have a 100% electric version available across the entire range, and in 2030 will sell electric only vehicles in the UK.

*A Miller-cycle operation leaves the intake valve open during part of the compression stroke, so that the engine is compressing against the pressure of the turbocharger rather than the pressure of the cylinder walls. The effect is increased efficiency.
