The first full-electric Maserati SUV: Grecale Folgore
Grecale Folgore is the first full-electric SUV in Maserati’s history. It offers an “everyday exceptional” experience, including for customers who enjoy electrification but do not want to forgo performance in pure Maserati style.
As such, it completes the Grecale family, the fullest range ever, with internal combustion/hybrid or full-electric engine.
The 100% electric version of the Grecale is named Folgore, the identifier of Maserati BEVs, which lights the fuse of a new energy.
With the right balance between sportiness and elegance, Maserati Grecale embodies the concepts of innovation, versatility, luxury, and performance. The Maserati SUV is top-class in terms of spaciousness and comfort; at launch, it inaugurated a new segment for the brand. And now, in its Folgore version, it is taking another significant step forward, entering the future of electrification.
Grecale Folgore arrives on the market one year after the hybrid and petrol models. It is entirely designed, developed and produced in Italy and is equipped with a 105 kWh battery using 400V technology.
Maserati’s new electric SUV can deliver as much as 820 Nm of torque, guaranteeing performance typical of the brand. Courtesy of the 100% electric propulsion, it offers 410 kW and a top speed of 220 km/h*.
Grecale Folgore is also recognisable for its exclusive Rame Folgore colour.
The key concept forming a foundation for Maserati's approach to the world of electric is metamorphosis.
The Rame Folgore exterior colour is the result of extensive research into how paint interacts with light, which evolves into a living being in constant interaction with its surroundings.
The inspiration is drawn from contemporary architecture, specifically from the façade of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, where warm copper hues in the sections in the sun co-exist with cooler shades of bluish grey in the areas in the shade. These colours are made possible using iridescent pigments.
The concept of aesthetic metamorphosis can also be found in the use of innovative materials such as ECONYL®, a new fibre with a unique aesthetic: a regenerated nylon made by recovering nylon waste – such as fishing nets from the oceans and aquaculture, fabric scraps from mills and carpets destined for landfill – and turning it into virgin quality nylon yarn for the fashion and interior industries.
This exclusive material, with its unique, highly opaque surface – reminiscent of the fabric used in the bodysuit, combined with laser processing – features a parametric design that expresses a natural dynamism. Inspired by the movements of a ballerina immortalised in a photograph, it speaks of a “controlled performance”, a movement made eternal.
At the front, Grecale Folgore remains “unique by design”, with a modified inverted grille for cooling, as an electric vehicle requires. The new Folgore’s front fascia is inspired by the Trofeo version. Outside, the visual longevity of the model makes it recognizable and contemporary. The aero-driven design is all-encompassing, to achieve a competitive target drag coefficient (Cx), alongside the redesigned rear diffusor.
The exterior of the Grecale Folgore features 19”**, 20” or 21" aero wheels (depending on market), specifically designed for maximum aerodynamics, inspired by the shape of the Trident.
The special Folgore grille has gloss black inserts on a slightly anodised silk black base. The splitters, door handles, DLO and side skirts are also finished in gloss black. The badges and brake callipers are both in copper colours, while the side vents are illuminated.
The interiors of the Grecale Folgore are distinguished by the defining Folgore embossed pattern on the dashboard and the distinctive carbon copper 3D touch interior trim, emphasised by the ambience lights. The sport 14-way ECONYL® electric seats in black/tan, in combination with the innovative lasering technique, offer the heated/ventilated features; the innovative regenerated yarn also characterises the headliner and carpet.
With Grecale Folgore, technology is in the name of in-car pleasure, ensuring exceptional emotions and digital performance; digital interfaces are tailored to the driver. The touchscreen is uncompromising: both the 12.3” central display (100% connected) and the 8.8” comfort display are ergonomically positioned to facilitate access to the controls.
Grecale Folgore features quick and easy digital climate controls. The new quick gesture controls, exclusive to Maserati, provide instant control over the temperature and fan speed, without taking your eyes off the road.
Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Baidu CarLife integrate the smartphone experience in just a few seconds. Users can connect up to two phones. On the Grecale Folgore, the on-board WeChat – the Chinese "super App" – with four key features, is now available for China.
The 12.3” digital cockpit is a benchmark in the market for intuitiveness, easy set-up and irresistible graphics. The reconfigurable head-up-display minimises driving distractions by projecting key information such as speed, maps and directions directly onto the windscreen, while the digital clock operates the voice assistant to quickly control climate, media, navigation and phone calls.
The MIA Maserati Intelligent Assistant has been optimised for Grecale Folgore, giving the digital experience unparalleled dynamism and graphical sophistication.
To make the driving experience even more immediate and enable the driver to configure the car according to their needs, the 100% electric Folgore version of the Grecale comes with four different driving modes: MAX RANGE, GT, SPORT, OFFROAD. Adjustments can be made via the drive mode selector on the forged black steering wheel, with drilled leather and blue engine start button: the racing soul of the Grecale Folgore is at your fingertips.
Furthermore, all Folgore models are equipped with Air suspension.
MAX RANGE mode, in which the car achieves maximum range by applying strategies to save energy. It is recommended when the battery falls below 16% and there are no charging points nearby. It throttles the top speed to 130 km/h, reduces the response of the accelerator pedal and limits the power of the climate control.

Grecale Folgore rolling chassis: the heart of Folgore
The Grecale Folgore rolling chassis highlights how the full-electric propulsion system is integrated into the vehicle.
The high-voltage battery (high capacity and high power) is installed under the body pavement.
This way, there is no compromise on the best-in-class interior volumes of Grecale.
The electric system is based on 400V architecture.
The battery power is discharged towards two 3-in-1 Electric Drive Modules installed on the front and rear axles.
This solution allows for optimal AWD transmission, which can be ideally managed for all driving conditions.
Each Electric Drive Module (EDM) integrate:
- the electric motor
- the high voltage inverter
- the single-gear + differential unit
The rolling chassis shows how both EDM are suspended inside the front and rear subframes through multi-stage elastic bushings to smoothen all vibration modes.
The charge port is connected:
- to the AC on-board charger positioned over the rear axle
- directly to the battery for DC fast charge
Installed over the front axle are:
- the auxiliary power module to convert DC 400V to DC 12V to sustain the low-voltage system
- the high-voltage electric heater, to manage the optimal coolant temperature inside the battery
During the press days of the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the Grecale Folgore rolling chassis will be on display.
Asian Premiere
The first-ever full-electric Maserati: GranTurismo Folgore
GranTurismo Folgore is the first car in Maserati history to adopt a 100% electric battery-based powertrain. The Folgore system is based on 800V technology and has been developed with cutting-edge technical solutions derived from Formula E. It offers superb performance, combined with the comfort and elegance typical of the Trident, made possible by the three powerful 300 kW permanent magnet motors (raising the installed power to over 1200 hp), to achieve a maximum available power at the wheels of over 750 hp.
GranTurismo Folgore represents the state of the art in terms of high-performance full-electric technology, combined with contemporary luxury.
Folgore is style, superb performance, sustainability, and equates to driving the new future at Maserati, now looking ahead to a stimulating, 100% electric world.
Folgore is designed for those who act as forerunners, as pioneers, for those who constantly seek to lead the way, looking ahead.
Folgore is therefore 100% electric, fascinating, and offers the use of sustainable materials such as ECONYL®, a new fibre with a unique aesthetic: a regenerated nylon made by recovering nylon waste – such as fishing nets from the oceans and aquaculture, fabric scraps from mills and carpets destined for landfill – and turning it into virgin-quality nylon yarn for the fashion and interior design industries.
This exclusive Maserati material expresses an aesthetic metamorphosis: its unique, highly opaque surface – reminiscent of the fabric used in the bodysuit, combined with laser processing – features a parametric design that expresses a natural dynamism. Inspired by the movements of a ballerina immortalised in a photograph, it speaks of a “controlled performance”, a movement made eternal.
The same dynamism enhances the dashboard and panels, via the “high frequency” leather printing technology, a process borrowed from high-end leather goods, brought to a car for the first time by Maserati. The innovative lasering gives the dashboard upholstery and the inside of the doors an exclusive character, unique in the market.
This version is available in two interior variants: one light, one dark. The light ice/denim variant comes with ice stitching; the dark variant with black upholstery and contrasting stitching in copper. ECONYL® accents can be seen on the seats, ceiling and pillars. The exterior features aero wheels (20” front and 21” rear), specifically designed for the best aerodynamics.
The special Folgore grille has gloss black inserts on a slightly anodised silk black base. The splitters, door handles, DLO and side skirts are also gloss black, while the Trident logo and the Maserati, Folgore and GranTurismo wording are all in dark copper.
Specific splitters, dedicated wheels in diamond-cut gloss black and front diffusers maximise the car’s Cx by approximately 7% compared to the petrol version and contribute to optimising its range. In order to reduce rustling inside the wheel arch, a specific air inlet – exclusive to this version – has been placed between the bumper and wheel arch.
The GranTurismo Folgore launch colour is Rame Folgore, an iridescent shade that provides a full account of the Maserati metamorphosis.
Rame Folgore is based on extensive research into how the colour can interact with light, in the form of the beam of light that evolves into a living being in constant interaction with its surroundings.
The inspiration is drawn from contemporary architecture, specifically from the façade of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, where warm copper hues in the sections in the sun co-exist with cooler shades of bluish grey in the areas in the shade. These colours are made possible by the use of iridescent pigments.
GranTurismo Folgore powertrain
GranTurismo Folgore represents Maserati's idea of electric mobility, where performance remains one of the main factors.
The Folgore powertrain has been developed around cutting-edge 800V technology, the current “state of the art” when it comes to performance and charging time.
In terms of components, the GranTurismo Folgore is driven by three motors, one in the front and two in the rear, for a total installed power of over 1200 hp. Specifically designed for exclusive use by Maserati, they reach higher levels of power density (9.2 kW/kg) and are driven by silicon carbide (SiC) inverters derived from Formula E. The two totally decoupled rear motors – with no transmission to interconnect the wheels – make it possible to direct the torque to each individual side, independently of each other. This kind of torque management for each individual wheel is known as torque vectoring.
Torque vectoring adjusts the car’s level of rotation (‘yaw’), not only when accelerating but also when the pedal is released and when braking. The system acts in a similar way to a sophisticated electronically controlled differential, but in the case of the GranTurismo Folgore, the potential and the level of control are considerably higher.
The battery, produced at the Mirafiori Battery Hub assembly plant in Turin, has a nominal capacity of 92.5 kWh and a discharge capacity of 610 kW, to continuously transmit more than 750 hp to the wheels.
The specific set-up and innovative layout of the battery result in the containment of vehicle height to 1353 mm, without compromising its sporty nature. The shape of the battery pack, known as ‘T-bone’, is another example of the “zero compromise” approach and avoids placing the battery modules under the seats, mainly moving them around the central tunnel and therefore considerably lowering the car’s H-point.
The GranTurismo Folgore sits lower than any other electric car on the market.
This battery design improves the manoeuvrability of the car, reducing the inertia factor and making it very pleasant to drive: all the mass is positioned close to the roll axis and the inertia tensor is therefore lower. Agility is one of the key factors; axial geometry in the battery makes changes of direction much faster than in cars with a platform battery, distributed throughout the body.
Supercharging the motors compared to the battery is another important factor for performance. This offers maximum flexibility in torque distribution up to very high values, unlike other applications on the market, forced to limit the power according to the distribution. GranTurismo Folgore can discharge 100% of the available power even with the rear axle alone in Rear-Wheel Drive configuration only; or can discharge up to 400 hp on a single rear wheel. In addition, the features of the GranTurismo Folgore system provide regen levels of up to 0.65 g, to recover energy during braking and achieve optimal conditions up to the peak charging rate of 400 kW.
Of course, electrification does not equate to losing the typical characteristics of Maserati’s DNA: an extensive study has been conducted on the sound, which remains an iconic factor.
In terms of the sound experience in the electric model, innovative engineering work has been carried out: the natural acoustic dynamics of the electric motors driven by the inverters have been digitally shaped and integrated with the typical sound taken from the Maserati V8 tradition.
All this in-depth analysis has made it possible to integrate know-how of the Maserati sound with the noise the vehicle naturally generates, to produce a unique acoustic experience, closely linked to the car yet innovative at the same time.
It goes without saying that an electric car has no exhaust or intake; the sound tuning function is therefore delegated to sophisticated signal processing software, operated by refined synthesisers and released into the space by high-quality speakers on the inside and out.
GranTurismo Folgore drive modes
The 100% electric Folgore version of the GranTurismo has four different driving modes: MAX RANGE, GT, SPORT, CORSA. Adjustments can be made via the drive mode selector on the steering wheel.
MAX RANGE mode, in which the car can achieve maximum range by applying strategies to save energy. It is recommended when the battery falls below 16% and there are no charging points nearby. It throttles the top speed to 130 km/h, reduces the response of the accelerator pedal and limits the power of the climate control.
GT mode is the default drive mode when the car is started, and provides a balanced, typically “granturismo” driving experience. It is ideal for everyday driving and guarantees maximum usability and comfort, with no restrictions on the GranTurismo’s dynamism. In this mode, the exuberant power of Folgore is limited to 80%. The sound is noticeable but moderate.
SPORT mode offers the best dynamic performance, for an exhilarating driving experience on everyday roads. The sound is boosted, the motor runs at 100% performance and the suspension set-up enhances the driving dynamics. Torque vectoring minimises the car's understeer in both coasting and regen, while the traction control gives greater freedom of control to the driver, who can even decide to disable ESC.
CORSA mode offers the driver the most extreme experience, the option of enjoying the true sporty embodiment of the GranTurismo Folgore, and the full performance of its unique 800V powertrain. In typical track use, the car adopts minimum control strategies, leaving the driver free to test their driving abilities. In this mode, the accelerator pedal becomes very direct, and the torque is delivered extremely quickly from the three motors. Torque vectoring maximises performance when entering, navigating and exiting corners. The suspension damping level increases and the car takes on a minimal ground clearance to maximise vertical downforce. The digital dashboard goes into Corsa mode to highlight the most relevant performance parameters, including monitoring of battery temperature (an important factor for performance) and torque distribution in relation to the maximum acceleration that can be achieved.

The MC20 Cielo: just raise your eyes and look up to the sky
In May 2022, the MC20 super sports car welcomed its spyder version: Maserati MC20 Cielo, a one-of-a-kind car that can deliver the performance of a true super sports car, together with a holistic and immersive driving pleasure the like of which has never been seen before.
MC20 Cielo announces its special features in its very name: MC stands for Maserati Corse; 20 refers to 2020, the year that began the brand’s new era; Cielo (sky) highlights the fact that it is a model devoted to driving pleasure in the great outdoors, while maintaining all the prerogatives of the coupé.
Equipped with the revolutionary V6 Nettuno engine, the Cielo offers a perfect mix of sportiness and luxury, courtesy of a specification unique to the segment: the innovative retractable glass roof.
The spyder acts a meeting point between Maserati audacity and the infinite sky, featuring a special “sky feeling”.
The model is equipped with a state-of-the-art electrochromic (smart glass) window that can instantly be transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on the central screen, courtesy of Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. The roof is also best-in-class in terms of thermal insulation and of opening and closing speed (just 12 seconds).
Courtesy of this epitome of technology, MC20 Cielo provides a multi-sensory driving experience: all-encompassing with the roof closed and opaque; unique for the in-cabin brightness when the roof is transparent; holistic with the top down.
Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the historic plant on Viale Ciro Menotti, the spyder is 100% made in Italy and 100% made in Modena, as is the coupé version.
MC20 Cielo is designed for perfection. It weighs just 65 kg more than the coupé, made possible by meticulous, precise work during the stages of the car’s design. As well as its outstanding weight-to-power ratio, the carbon fibre chassis (the same for all three configurations to come, coupé, spyder and the future electric version) also guarantees uncompromising torsional rigidity, offering a combination of extraordinary handling on the road and on the track.
This spyder is a car with an elegant yet highly sporty design. Its character and personality are truly eye-catching for the purity of its forms and the refined aerodynamics subjected to 360° testing in a wind tunnel, whether the roof is open or closed. Nothing is superfluous in the design; everything has its own function. The only concession to a surprise effect is the butterfly doors, as in the MC20 super sports car. The butterfly door provides much easier access into and out of the cabin, as well as showing off the carbon fibre cockpit and the completely unmasked front wheel.
From an aesthetic perspective, the launch version features a new three-layer metallic colour known as Acquamarina, available as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme.
A colour that interacts with light, revealing itself in a surprising way. The base is a pastel grey inspired by racing, reminiscent of the MC20’s sporty DNA, accompanied by an iridescent aquamarine mica that enlivens the hue and makes it exceptional.
The model also adds a wide range of Active Safety Systems. As well as the parking sensors, rear-view camera and blind spot monitoring included in the MC20 since the MY22, the spyder introduces autonomous emergency brake, traffic sign information and a new 360° camera.
MC20 Cielo is equipped with an optional High Premium Sonus faber audio system. The MC20 Coupé system, an EISA award-winning in-vehicle audio system, has been specifically optimized to fit the unique acoustic and positioning needs of the spyder’s cabin, situating the system’s 12 speakers to result in the Natural Sound that distinguishes Sonus faber audio systems.
Finally, the in-car experience is managed from the MIA Maserati Intelligent Assistant multimedia system, and from Maserati Connect.
During the press and public days of the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the Maserati MC20 Cielo will be on display, in the Acquamarina colour.
MC20 Cielo Folgore rolling chassis: the heart of Folgore
MC20 Cielo Folgore Rolling Chassis mainly consists of three elements:
- Carbon monocoque, derived from the MC20 ICE coupé, designed by Maserati engineers with the support of Dallara. The monocoque is 100% carbon fibre in order to minimise weight and maximise structural performance, ensuring extraordinary levels of vehicle dynamics and performance. The monocoque’s architecture and geometry are the same for all three versions but differ in the distribution of the carbon fibre and layers, to provide the monocoques with different structural characteristics for the three different types of cars: the focus for the coupé will be on lightness and performance; the convertible demands greater torsional rigidity due to the absence of a roof; the electric version will have more overall strength and enhanced protection for the battery area. Therefore, a single design embraces the three versions, with changes only in the type, quantity, and arrangement of the carbon fibre.
- High-voltage battery: 100% developed by Maserati Innovation Lab engineers, made up of ultra-fast cells and with 800V electrical architecture. Derived from the Maserati GT/GC but with a compact and outstanding layout to optimise the vehicle weight distribution and to place the battery in the vehicle’s rear side rather than a combustion engine (a unique solution in its segment) ensuring uncompromising style and architectural changes compared to the ICE version.
- Electric high-performance motors for a unique technical solution in its segment: one at the front axle and two at the rear axle, ensuring AWD transmission and full torque vectoring via an innovative vehicle control system, to offer an incredible and exciting 100% Maserati sporty driving experience.
The Maserati BEV propulsion system is a next-gen 800V. To deliver an uncompromising driving experience for its Sport 800V application, Maserati also decided to provide a unique three high-performance motor propulsion configuration as standard.
The level of total torque and power will provide best-in-class performance with no gearbox or gear shifts and better mechanical efficiency, to improve range.
The double motors rear axle, with fully independent right/left control, enables unprecedented torque vectoring capabilities for outstanding dynamic control of the vehicle.
A special roar will continue to be an iconic feature for Maserati: anyone on board a Maserati must always hear the unmistakable sound of its engine.
During the press days of the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the MC20 Cielo Folgore rolling chassis will be on display.
FTributo Special Edition: celebrating the pioneer Maria Teresa de Filippis
Maserati’s sporting DNA has inspired a special edition for the Ghibli and Levante that pays tribute to Maria Teresa de Filippis and her story of audacity. Maria Teresa was a pioneer in motorsport, as the first woman to qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix in a Maserati 250F.
The tenacious spirit of Maria Teresa de Filippis, as well as the Trident’s timeless reference to the racing world have inspired the FTributo Special Edition, a limited series available for the Ghibli and Levante in two exclusive colours – Arancio Devil and Grigio Lamiera.
Arancio Devil is a special ceramic colour, a combination of vibrant energy and boldness, to recall Maria Teresa's nickname, “the she-devil”. It is distinguished by remarkable notes of brilliance that make it a one-of-a-kind. The colour was inspired by Maria Teresa’s volcanic personality and her strong Neapolitan roots, the basis for using orange as its colour, while its name was inspired by her driving style. The blue/orange stitching, where blue represents the noble origins of racing driver Maria Teresa de Filippis, contrasts with the Arancio Devil colour of the exteriors and black leather interiors, for a visually sporty effect.
The matte grey wheels of the Maserati Levante in the Arancio Devil colour come with cobalt blue accent, recalling Maria Teresa’s lineage, while the callipers are painted in an oxidised blue, with a matching blue badge on the fender and the pillar.
The Grigio Lamiera colour was created by combining two elements: the overalls used at the time (with a light blue base) and the forged parts of the cars, which gave rise to the colour's name. The combination of these elements resulted in this colour, the aim of which was to produce a vintage and sporty shade with a strong and elegant connotation, reminiscent of Maria Teresa’s personality. The Ghibli FTributo’ interiors are distinguished by tan leather with contrasting orange stitching.
The gloss black wheels of the Maserati Ghibli in the Grigio Lamiera colour come with details in orange; the callipers are also painted gloss black, with the Maserati logo in orange to echo the badge on the fender and the pillar.
During the public days of the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the Levante FTributo in Arancio Devil will be on display, alongside the Ghibli FTributo in the Grigio Lamiera colour.
