Citroën UK has welcomed plans set out by the UK Government to provide further support for young people to gain access to extracurricular sport and physical education activities across the country.
The new School Sports Partnerships and Enrichment Framework initiatives were announced by the Prime Minister on Friday, 20 June, to provide schools with a new framework to allow a clear focus on equal access to exercise, including a set of two hours per week of physical education.
The announcement from the Government follows recent news that Citroën is partnering with England Athletics, the development body for grassroots running and athletics in the UK, as well as its official charity partner, the Personal Best Foundation, to encourage activity opportunities for children and young people, allowing them to experience the benefits of athletics and running at an early age, and then continue throughout school and into adulthood.
Through the partnership, Citroën is supporting the Personal Best Foundation to deliver an after-school athletics programme starting with 15 schools across Coventry, Warwickshire and Ellesmere Port. Supporting England’s future stars of athletics, Citroën will also be the headline partners for England Athletics’ National and Age Group Athletics Championship, which will take place at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, from 25th to 27th July, whilst working closely with the organisation to support 16 athletes on the England Athletics Talent Pathway Programme.
Greg Taylor, Citroën UK Managing Director, said: “The Government’s introduction of the School Sport Partnerships and Enrichment Framework is a welcome boost for the country’s future athletics stars, and a strong show of support for schools across the country working hard to provide greater access to exercise for young people. Recent research we have conducted shows that parents are concerned about their kids not having sufficient access to exercise, while less than half of children are meeting the UK’s Chief Medical Officer’s recommended daily activity levels*.
“It is clear that more must be done to ensure that young people are given sufficient access and resources to allow them to exercise regularly. Our recent partnership with England Athletics was set up to provide greater access to fitness and exercise, especially for schools where facilities may have been limited. We are looking forward to a busy summer of sport with the England Athletics team and hope to see even more opportunities become available to keep younger generations active.”
Citroën announced its partnership with England Athletics following research that found nearly three-quarters (73%) of parents say their children do not get the minimum amount of exercise recommended by UK Chief Medical Officers. The research showed that British children spend 4.75 hours a week exercising, while the Chief Medical Officers recommend at least 60 minutes every day.
