The Junior’s arrival comes with an early benchmark moment in South Africa’s top automotive awards.
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 19 December 2025 – The Alfa Romeo Junior has been named a semi-finalist in the 2026 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition, sponsored by Old Mutual Insure. Positioned in the premium compact electric segment, the Junior combines a well-engineered electric powertrain with advanced vehicle technology and distinctive Italian design, underscoring Alfa Romeo’s continued focus on performance-led electrification.
This recognition follows shortly after the Junior was introduced to the market by Stellantis South Africa, placing Alfa Romeo’s first fully electric model into a nationally recognised measure of new-vehicle excellence.
Administered by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ), the Car of the Year competition evaluates vehicles launched during the year across performance, engineering, value and overall execution.
The Alfa Romeo Junior’s inclusion sees the vehicle being assessed alongside a field of established competitors, offering a clear reference point for how Alfa Romeo’s electric strategy is being judged in the local context.
An early marker for Alfa Romeo’s electric future
“Being named a semi-finalist so soon after launch is an encouraging signal for the Junior,” says Janus Janse van Rensburg, Head of Marketing and Sales at Alfa Romeo South Africa. “The Car of the Year evaluation process is rigorous, and recognition at this stage reflects the vehicle’s underlying engineering, technology and overall execution and we couldn’t be more excited.”
The Alfa Romeo Junior arrived in South Africa in October 2025, marking a significant step for the brand as it introduced its first fully electric model to the local market. Compact in footprint yet unmistakably Italian in its execution, the Junior carries Alfa Romeo’s focus on driver engagement, while introducing new electric function to the range.
Performance-led electrification
The Junior line-up includes the Elettrica and the Elettrica Veloce. The Elettrica produces 118 kW and 260 Nm, with a top speed of 152km/h reached in just over 9 seconds.
The range-topping Elettrica Veloce delivers 207 kW and 345 Nm, and can go from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds before topping out at 200km/h.
The Junior was designed for those who still drive for the feel of it, with a front-mounted electric motor set within a compact 4.2m-long body, this premium compact vehicle has great road stance and balance.
“What we were determined to preserve with Junior is the way an Alfa Romeo feels from behind the wheel,” Janse van Rensburg adds. “Even as an electric vehicle, it remains responsive and engaging, which is central to the brand’s identity and what customers have come to expect.”
Everyday usability, Italian luxury
While official South African WLTP figures have yet to be published, independent local reporting suggests a driving range of 410km for the standard Elettrica, with the higher performance Veloce topping out at 334km, based on current specifications.
Pricing for the Alfa Romeo Junior starts from R799 900 for the Elettrica, with the Elettrica Veloce priced from R999 900.
The Junior is available at Alfa Romeo dealerships nationwide.
