Chrysler Group Introduces In-Car Wireless Charging

Chrysler Group is set to eliminate unsightly recharging cords by offering wireless charging for mobile devices in its vehicles. The new technology, pioneered by Chrysler's performance parts and accessory division, Mopar, will initially be available for the new Dodge Dart, which goes on sale in North America shortly.

Available as an accessory, the wireless charger is specifically designed to be installed in the storage area located just below the Dart's centre stack and is activated when a mobile device, fitted with a special case* (included with the charger), is placed on top of it.

The charging system retails for $199.99 in the U.S. (around €150**) and will become more widely available across a variety of vehicles in the not-too-distant future. Other previous Chrysler Group technological firsts include smartphone vehicle-information applications; electronic vehicle tracking with SMS updates; in-vehicle Wi-Fi hot spots and digital owners' manuals.

FIAT Group Automobiles shares a similar cord-free philosophy, having pioneered clip-in satellite-navigation systems which integrate fully with the car's Blue&Me system while costing a fraction of a full-integrated navigation unit.

Much of the technology found in the Dodge Dart will also be available in the all-new FIAT Viaggio, which debuts at the Beijing International Auto Show on April 23rd. The vehicles share the same advanced CUSW architecture, based on that of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, as well as powertrains, electrical systems and other technologies.
