Stellantis anuncia una inversión estratégica en cobre en Argentina, reforzando el compromiso de alcanzar las cero emisiones netas de carbono en 2038
Con una inversión de US$155 millones en McEwen Copper, Stellantis se asegura el abastecimiento de la demanda de cobre proyectada a partir de 2027. Stellantis se convierte en el segundo mayor accionista. Mina de cobre sostenible, proyecto Los Azules, ubicada en Argentina. El cobre catódico es una materia prima estratégica para la producción de baterías para vehículos eléctricos.

Con esta participación, Stellantis será el segundo mayor accionista de McEwen Copper junto con Rio Tinto, a través de su empresa de tecnología de lixiviación de cobre, Nuton. Los Azules prevé producir 100.000 toneladas anuales de cobre catódico con una pureza del 99,9% a partir de 2027 y los recursos pueden asegurar la operación durante al menos 33 años.
“Stellantis tiene la intención de liderar la industria con el compromiso de cero emisiones netas de carbono en 2038, una meta que requiere innovación y una redefinición completa de todo el negocio”, expresó Carlos Tavares, CEO de Stellantis. “Estamos dando pasos importantes en Argentina y Brasil, con el objetivo de descarbonizar la movilidad y asegurar el abastecimiento estratégico de materias primas necesarias para el éxito de los planes globales de electrificación de la compañía” agregó Tavares.
El cobre es una materia prima estratégica para el futuro de la movilidad eléctrica y se estima que la demanda mundial del metal conductor se triplicará en los próximos años. Al realizar esta inversión en uno de los 10 proyectos internacionales más grandes en desarrollo para esta materia prima, Stellantis podrá abastecer parte de la demanda de cobre proyectada a partir de 2027.

Juntos, compartimos la visión de construir una mina para el futuro basada en principios regenerativos y tecnologías innovadoras que puedan lograr cero emisiones netas de carbono para 2038. Tenemos el compromiso de entregar de manera sostenible cobre a Argentina y al mundo, un producto que contribuya a la electrificación del transporte y la protección de nuestra atmósfera”.
Este anuncio refuerza la participación de América del Sur en la implementación del plan estratégico a largo plazo Dare Forward 2030, comprometido con la libertad de movilidad de vanguardia.
Como parte del plan estratégico Dare Forward 2030, Stellantis prevé alcanzar el 100% de participación de vehículos eléctricos (BEV) en el mix de ventas de turismos en Europa y el 50 % en el mix de ventas de turismos y vehículos comerciales ligeros BEV en los Estados Unidos para 2030. En Brasil el objetivo aproximado es ofrecer un 20% de LEV en el mix de ventas al final de la década. El plan está apoyado por una ambiciosa estrategia de descarbonización consistente con las recomendaciones basadas en la ciencia. A través de objetivos contundentes y claros, para 2030(1) el plan es reducir su huella de emisiones de carbono a la mitad en comparación con las métricas de 2021, poniendo a la compañía en el camino para lograr cero emisiones netas de carbono en 2038(2).
