Figueruelas, Spain - June 2026 Leapmotor International, the strategic joint venture between Stellantis and Leapmotor, announces the opening of its new battery workshop in Mallén, near Zaragoza, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy in Europe. This development represents the evolution from a successful commercial partnership to a tangible industrial execution in the region.
The new facility - dedicated to assembling battery modules and key processes supporting electric vehicle production - follows recent announcements regarding the production of the B10 model in Figueruelas and the partnership for the development of an Opel C-SUV.
The Mallén plant covers a total surface of approximately 34.000 square meters, including 19.000 square meters of built area, and is designed to deliver both efficiency and scalability.
The facility has been engineered to cope with different battery chemistry to adapt to an ever-evolving BEV battery technology landscape. Initial production will focus on the supply of the Leapmotor B-platform recently installed in the Zaragoza plant with the two batteries based on LFP technology (Pro and ProMax versions).
At the heart of the Mallén project lies a strong collaboration between China and Europe, combining advanced Chinese technology with European industrial expertise and know-how. Spanish teams will work side by side with Chinese experts, creating a unique environment for knowledge exchange and operational excellence allowing the local workforce to learn from the global best-in-class Chinese experts.
From a local perspective, the project is already delivering meaningful economic benefits, with active recruitment and training activities underway.
The Leapmotor International project leader Yann Martin commented: “The Mallén plant represent a major milestone in the Stellantis and Leapmotor cooperation and strategic footprint in Europe.”
As an expression of the shared experiences that underpin the basis of this project, the initial phase includes local management, Leapmotor expatriates, some experienced Spanish team leaders, volunteering from the Zaragoza plant, to support in the first steps of the technical development of the activity in the shopfloor, coming back from an extensive training at one Leapmotor battery facility in China. Additional local employees will join the team in the coming weeks and months.
Over time, the project is also expected to foster the development of a broader industrial ecosystem, attracting suppliers and supporting services to the area. From an operational standpoint, the Mallén plant stands out for its fast execution and ramp-up, driven by modern production processes designed to ensure efficiency, quality and scalability in battery modules assembly and related operations.
The opening of the Mallén facility underscores Leapmotor International’s ambition to establish a sustainable and competitive industrial footprint in Europe, while strengthening ties between global innovation and local expertise. This plant represents a concrete step forward in Leapmotor International’s European journey, reflecting not only its commitment to industrialization in the region but also the strength of the cross-continental collaboration that defines its approach. This project has been supported by the central government; by regional authorities: Aragón Government and Aragón Exterior and by local one’s, Mallen Council, aiming to continuously enrich the employment in the Region.
