The brand new PEUGEOT e-208, the PEUGEOTS brand’s first 100% electric vehicle, has just won a huge prize in Portugal, adding to its numerous victories, the trophy of "Electric Car of the Year". The editorial staff of Exame Informática praised the PEUGEOT e-208 for its bold design, driving pleasure and comfort, as well as for the technology it incorporates. These are features with high added value, appreciated in a car that also stands out for its quality, innovation and reliability.

The trophies for the 14th edition of the "The Best of Technology”[1] award were presented on the 18th November, for the 25th anniversary of the publication.

These prizes are intended to honour researchers still unknown to the general public, ideas put to the test in universities and companies that do more for the environment and sustainable development. They also reward the best products and leading manufacturers and are awarded in different categories: People, Innovation, Sustainable Development, Application / Platform, National Brand, Smartphone Brand, Computer Brand and finally Product of the Year. In previous editions, entities or solutions from companies such as Farfetch, Huawei, Tesla, Google or WeDo Technologies have been recognised.

For this 2020 edition, the new PEUGEOT e-208 is the only car to have been recognised and named the best electric car of the year 2020.

In other areas, the "Innovation" prize was awarded to the Breast 4.0 system, which enables 3D visualisation of tumour lesions using augmented reality, and which was developed by a surgeon from the Champalimaud Foundation, one of the world's most respected centres in the fields of biomedicine, cancer research and treatment, and neuroscience. The "Personality of the Year" award went to Maria Helena Braga, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, who has been at the forefront of research and development of solid electrolyte batteries.

With this new prize awarded in Portugal, the number of distinctions awarded to the new PEUGEOT 208 and e-208 in Europe has now risen to 18, including the prestigious European trophy "Car Of The Year 2020 [2]". This trophy has paved the way for a series of awards in Portugal that have rewarded the brand's city-dweller vehicle:

  • Award for the "Best Urban Car" in the "Carro do Ano 2020 [3]” vote.
  • "Best Urban Car of the Year" awarded by the car magazine Turbo,
  • "Best under 20,000 euro car" awarded by the magazine l'Observador.

The new PEUGEOT e-208 is equipped with a 50 kWh battery and a 100 kW (136 hp) electric engine. It has a range of up to 340 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. The battery can be rapidly charged to 80% of its capacity in 30 minutes using a public charging station with a capacity of up to 100 kW. The new PEUGEOT 208 represents a new distinctive style but is also innovative with a new generation of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit© with 3D head-up display and a range of driving aids from the upper segments.

Sérgio Magno, director of Exame Informática: "Unearthing a large part of the talent that is still under the radar of the market and the media is part of our DNA. And this is one of the main missions of “Os Melhores do Portugal Tecnológico [4]”: to broaden the creation of knowledge and the generation of technological wealth. In the field of automotive and electric mobility, it is the PEUGEOT e-208 that has been honoured, a model that Exame Informática considers to be the "electric car of the year". Its design, manoeuvrability and technology are the main attributes of this new PEUGEOT. A car that demonstrates that there is no need to makes any compromises when going electric".

Jorge Tomé, Director of PEUGEOT Portugal: "The new PEUGEOT e-208 is the first model of our new generation of electric cars. It is great to see that it is immediately recognised by our customers, as well as by the press. The "Os Melhores do Portugal Tecnológico" prize awarded by Exame Informática to the new PEUGEOT e-208 is particularly important to us, as it is awarded by a jury that is attentive to the contribution of science and new technologies to our daily lives. It places the 208 electric vehicle alongside the best in the field of technology in cross-cutting sectors of society.

Whether with 100% electric or internal combustion versions, at PEUGEOT, customers do not have to compromise on style, versatility of use or spaciousness. This is the "Power of Choice".

Finally, I would like to thank the editorial team at Exame Informática and reiterate to them our commitment to electrification. We will continue to make a name for ourselves, especially with our new PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED label, paving the way for a new era in which the kilowatt is king and offers levels of power and torque never before achieved for PEUGEOT brand mass production".
