Peugeot Design Lab receives two Janus Design awards

At the Janus presentation ceremony held on 30 June at the Quai d’Orsay, the Institut Français du Design (French Institute of Design) made two Janus awards to the PEUGEOT global brand design studio, the Peugeot Design Lab: the revolutionary Peugeot Design Lab for Pleyel piano received the Janus du patrimoine et de l’innovation (Heritage and Innovation Janus) and the PEUGEOT AE21 HYbrid Bike electrically assisted bicycle received the Janus de l’industrie (Industry Janus).

Peugeot Design Lab receives two Janus Design awards

The Institut Français du Design (French Institute of Design) is the descendant of the Institut d’Esthétique Industrielle (Institute of Industrial Aesthetics) founded in 1951 by Jacques Vienot, a visionary designer who, surrounded by 400 industrial leaders, invented the concept of industrial aesthetics in France. For 60 years, the Janus awards – made by a jury of 50 independent experts - reward innovative products of functional design, that focus on the needs of the user and their surroundings.

This year, the PEUGEOT global brand design studio, the Peugeot Design Lab, received awards for two of its creations:

- the celebrated Peugeot Design Lab for Pleyel piano receives the Janus du patrimoine et de l’innovation (Heritage and Innovation Janus). The first object created by the Peugeot Design Lab in 2012, with its avant-garde appearance, this piano has a structure that combines carbon fibre, wood and steel, and stands on a single leg. The acoustic performance is magnified. The arrangement of the keyboard as an extension of the soundboard gives the player a better perception of the sound, and allows the audience to admire the player’s hands on the keyboard. Examples of this piano have already been sold to individuals, notably in London and in Mexico.

- the PEUGEOT AE21HYbrid bike received the Janus de l’industrie (Industry Janus). This electrically assisted bicycle, launched in 2014 and available from the Peugeot dealer network and official retailers, is hyper-ergonomic and designed for the city: its aluminium frame includes many useful features : laptop bag, USB connection, storage for a security lock. The jury particularly liked its “…clean outline and the effort made to reduce the space needed for parking through its folding pedal and handlebars”.

Since its creation in 2012, the Peugeot Design Lab has already carried out work for many clients: Dassault Aviation, Airbus Helicopters, Alsthom, Bombardier, Leclerc, the SEB Group, Quechua, Peugeot Saveurs,… One its recent creations is the PEUGEOT Foodtruck, the Bistro of the Lion (Bistrot du Lion), currently in service at the Milan universal exhibition, in front of the French Pavilion.
