Rüsselsheim.  They are powerful, dynamic and electrified: the new Opel Astra GSe and Opel Astra Sports Tourer GSe. The new top-of-the-line versions of the compact class bestseller and the new Grandland GSe are the first Opel models to wear the famous returning “GSe” abbreviation. And in keeping with Opel’s ongoing electrification offensive the three letter now stand for “Grand Sport electric” or a new sub-brand of dynamic, electrified models with the Blitz. The state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid variants offer everything that sporty but also responsible drivers want: top performance, a sporty chassis and an electrified drive for locally emission-free driving. In addition, they come with a stunning design.

As is typical for the new GSe models, the Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe come with exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels and the characteristic GSe front bumper. Inside, GSe-exclusive performance seats make the driver and front passenger feel fully integrated into the vehicle. The full range of state-of-the-art Opel assistance systems rounds off the offer. Equipped in this way, customers can already order the new Astra GSe for €45,510 (all prices RRP including VAT in Germany).

Unique driving experience: GSe chassis and top-of-the-line plug-in hybrid

With an impressive system output of 165 kW/225 hp - the 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine delivers 133 kW/180 hp, the electric motor contributes up to 81.2 kW/110 hp - and maximum torque of 360 Nm, the new Astra GSe makes a clear statement in its class (fuel consumption according to WLTP1: 1.2-1.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 26-25 g/km; each combined). A brisk start from traffic lights and a sporty top speed are guaranteed. From a standing start, the five-door hatchback accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds; a top speed of up to 235 km/h is possible (135 km/h purely electric). And thanks to the 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Astra GSe can cover up to 64 kilometres locally emission-free according to WLTP2 (EAER City according to WLTP2: 69-73 km).

In addition, the newcomers will set a new benchmark for driver engagement. In comparison to their Astra siblings, the GSe models are even more agile and even more precise; the steering, suspension and brakes respond immediately and predictably to every driver input.

The German carmaker has achieved the performance-oriented handling characteristics by equipping the new Opel Astra GSe models with a dedicated chassis, lowered by 10 millimetres. Compared with their immediate rivals, the newcomers will deliver superior stability during cornering, under braking and – like every Opel – while driving at high speed on the Autobahn.

The sporty calibration of the steering is GSe-specific, while the unique springs and oil-filled dampers of the front and rear suspension are specially tuned not only for dynamic driving but also for comfortable cruising. The dampers feature KONI FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) technology, which enables different damping characteristics at high frequencies (suspension control) versus low frequencies (body control). The ESP settings are also exclusive to GSe models, with the activation threshold adjusted upwards to match the dynamic driving behaviour.

Purposeful: Bold and pure Astra-design plus signature GSe styling cues

The new-generation Opel Astra is a bold and pure design statement for the brand; the signature styling cues of the GSe give it an even more purposeful appearance. From the outside, the design of the 18-inch light-alloy wheels in Diamond Cut/Black – inspired by the acclaimed, all-electric Manta GSe – the specific front bumper and fascia, and the GSe emblem on the tailgate, leave no doubts as to the dynamic GSe character.

Inside, the sporty ambitions are highlighted by the AGR-certified Alcantara GSe performance seats. They ensure that the driver and front passenger always enjoy a firm hold during dynamic driving, while their spine benefits from the comfortable and back-friendly design of the seats. The performance seats are not only exclusive to the GSe, they also further extend Opel’s long-standing reputation for superior seat ergonomics at an affordable price. In addition, seat and steering wheel heating ensure a pleasant feeling when temperatures drop.

The portfolio of state-of-the-art assistance systems covers the entire range that Opel currently offers for the Astra. For example, the Astra GSe comes with the Intelli-Drive 1.0 system with forward collision alert and active emergency braking, pedestrian and drowsiness detection, lane departure warning and traffic sign assistant, cross traffic and side blind spot alert and automatic speed assistant with stop function as standard. The parking pilot for the front and rear and the 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera support the driver when manoeuvring. And GSe passengers are well connected with the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible multimedia navigation system including 10-inch colour touchscreen and the 10-inch driver information display. Compatible smartphones can also be easily charged via wireless charging in the centre console.

The Opel “GSe” label was traditionally an abbreviation of “Grand Sport Einspritzung” (Grand Sport Injection) as on the Opel Commodore GS/E and the Opel Monza GSE. GSe is now Opel’s top-of-the-range, sporty sub-brand, standing for “Grand Sport electric”. By combining “fun-to-drive” values with the option of locally emission-free mobility, Opel GSe models will redefine the performance Zeitgeist. Elsewhere, GSe fans who are already looking forward to the Astra Sports Tourer GSe will have to be patient. Opel will announce prices for the performance estate at a later date.

[1] Values determined using the more realistic WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) test method which replaces the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test procedure. A vehicle's consumption, CO2 emissions and range not only depend on the efficient use of energy by the vehicle but are also influenced by driving style and other non-technical factors. The information on consumption and emissions does not refer to an individual vehicle and is intended solely for purposes of comparison between the various vehicle types. Vehicle not available yet.

[2] Range determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). The actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.
