Amsterdam.  The Opel Vivaro HYDROGEN was named the ‘2025 Promise of the Year’ at the 2025 Van of the Year Awards organised by Dutch magazine ‘Automotive Magazin’. According to the independent jury of commercial vehicle experts, Opel and Stellantis have demonstrated boldness by bringing this hydrogen-powered van to the market and making this technology more accessible to a broader range of business owners.

“The hydrogen proposition from Stellantis is highly interesting,” the expert panel noted in its report on the ‘2025 Promise of the Year’. In the jury’s view, hydrogen can provide a solution for companies looking to electrify their fleet without relying on charging networks and having to wait for charging. The panel members have observed growing interest in hydrogen power for light commercial vehicles in practice.

Emission-free zones in cities

The increasing interest in locally emissions-free commercial vehicles in the Netherlands is partly due to the fact that from January 1, 2025, several dozen cities in the country will only allow electrically powered vans and trucks in city centres. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are also permitted in these zones, as they only emit water vapour. The required energy for the electric drivetrain in these vehicles comes from a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity and water.

Up to 400 km range

The Opel Vivaro HYDROGEN is equipped with an innovative plug-in hybrid hydrogen fuel cell electric drive system. A 45 kW fuel cell, combined with a rechargeable 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, supplies the energy for the 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor. The hydrogen is stored in three tanks under the floor of Opel’s mid-sized van. The tanks can be filled in three minutes with up to 4.4 kg of hydrogen. Combined with a fully charged battery, the Opel Vivaro HYDROGEN offers a range of up to 400 kilometres1.

New Movano HYDROGEN celebrates world premiere

Opel recently strengthened its hydrogen offer even further by bringing the technology to the large van segment in the new Movano HYDROGEN, which celebrated its world premiere at the IAA Transportation in Hanover. With its combination of hydrogen fuel cell drive and plug-in battery, the newcomer can travel over 500 kilometres2 and can be refuelled with hydrogen in under 5 minutes. This is an ideal solution for customers who need to drive long distances with zero local emissions and not lose time refuelling. The electric motor offers 110 kW (150 hp) of power and a maximum torque of 410 Newton meters. The 11 kWh lithium-ion battery provides support when starting or accelerating. Another major advantage of the system: braking energy can be recuperated and fed into the battery as electricity via the electric motor working as a generator.
