Rüsselsheim.  The Opel Mokka X may be small in size (only 4.28 metres short) but it the sub-compact SUV is definitely big in popularity. The award-winning all-wheel drive car has become a bestseller in Europe over the past years and has laid the foundation for the Opel X family which also includes the two newcomers Crossland X and Grandland X. Since its introduction in 2012, the compact SUV has won over new customers for Opel who appreciate stylish looks, a lively engine line-up with an adventurous personality and state-of-the-art technologies.

Design: Bold, adventurous, refined

The Opel Mokka X’ exterior design displays a bold attitude. Its front look is aligned with Opel’s design philosophy “German precision meets sculptural artistry” including a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and the dominant, sharp double wing signature of the LED daytime running lights. The front fascia also gets more precisely and elegantly sculpted surfaces. With its wide stance, the Mokka X looks solid and masculine. It is continued at the rear with another double wing signature also featured in the optionally available LED tail lamps. The body side retains its sculpted and elegant traits and sporty edge with muscular and athletic lower body lines, energised by Opel’s typical ‘blade’ that sweeps upwards to the rear.

On the inside, the Opel Mokka X’ ambiance has been redefined. The instrument panel is organised around horizontally oriented elements. It looks both simpler and purer, as well as sharper and more precise in its execution. The center stack has been redeveloped around the 7 and 8-inch colour touchscreens of the modern IntelliLink infotainment systems. It now impresses with refined elegance and a purer design with less buttons – many functions are now accessible via the capacitive touchscreens. Furthermore, the central information display comes with improved readability thanks to crisp 3.5-inch mono and 4.2-inch colour screens with white LCD illumination.

Tight grip: Adaptive all-wheel drive

The Opel Mokka X comes optionally with an intelligent adaptive all-wheel drive system that secured it two All-wheel Drive Car of the Year Awards in Germany. The system with electronic, multi-disk clutch system can seamlessly distribute power between the front and rear axle from 100:0 to 50:50, while in normal everyday use it runs as an economical front-wheel drive car. It is activated when the Opel Mokka X is stationary to prevent wheel slip at take-off. It also engages unobtrusively in a split second as soon as the driver depresses the clutch pedal (“active on demand system”). Once up and running, all power is transferred to the front wheels and the all-wheel drive system is only engaged when driving situations require it to improve the traction, especially on wet and slippery surfaces. On wet and rainy roads, an occasional redistribution of drivetrain power is available. Depending on vehicle status and road conditions, torque can be transferred to the rear axle. So even in short situations, for instance when hitting a pothole or an ice spot the additional torque in the rear wheels provides maximal traction and stability, thus increasing the feeling of safety and with it driving pleasure.

The all-wheel drive system is available in combination with the 1.4-litre Turbo petrol engine with 103 kW/140 hp (fuel consumption¹: urban 9.2-9.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 6.1-5.9 l/100 km, combined 7.2-7.0 l/100 km; 167-162 g/km CO₂) and the1.6 Diesel with 100 kW/136 hp (fuel consumption[1]: urban 6.2-6.0 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.1-5.0 l/100 km, combined 5.2-5.4 l/100 km; 146-142 g/km CO2). In both cases, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The majority of engines in the Mokka X portfolio – with front or all-wheel drive, six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission – already comply with the stringent future Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

Safety: AFL LED headlamps and modern Opel Eye front camera

During the development of the Opel Mokka X, Opel engineers followed the company’s strategy of making innovative technology available to a broad group of buyers by introducing Adaptive Forward Lighting with full LED headlamps. The AFL LED system adapts the headlights lighting functions automatically to the driving situation so that the best possible light performance is given without glaring other drivers. It features nine different functions such as town light, country light and tourist mode. This full LED system offers advantages over the previous BiXenon AFL+. On one hand, LED features a light quality that allows seeing the ‘true’ colours of things, to the benefit of visual comfort. In addition, as there is no mechanical operation within the lamp module, it is faster and more accurate in its reaction, while also being highly reliable over time. Furthermore, the headlamps use less energy and are thus more economical.

Furthermore, the modern Opel Eye front camera with a high resolution and image processing power has a positive impact on all the functions it supports, including the High Beam Assist of the AFL LED lighting system. Due to the sophisticated camera and the optional navigation support sending traffic signs to the on-board-system, the enhanced Traffic Sign Assistant of the Opel Mokka X has a high detection rate. The Forward Collision Alert utilises the front camera to detect moving lead vehicles and features a reflective LED Alert Display. When the distance between the car and the vehicle ahead diminishes too quickly, red LEDs reflect in the windscreen. In addition, an audible caution alerts the driver that braking is necessary. The Lane Departure Warning is activated automatically at speeds over 60 km/h and warns the driver, in case the lane is left unintentionally with a telltale in the instrument panel and an audible warning.

Connectivity & comfort: From latest generation IntelliLink to ergonomic seats

In the Opel Mokka X, the two infotainment systems Radio R 4.0 IntelliLink and Navi 900 IntelliLink offer all-round onboard entertainment over the up to 8-inch colour touchscreen. Both systems bring the world of smartphones to the car via both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection (where available).

Apart from offering passengers top connectivity and entertainment features, the Opel Mokka X also provides one of the highest comfort levels in its class. Like in most Opel models, the AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken = Campaign for Healthier Backs led by independent back health experts) tested and certified ergonomic seats make long highway journeys just as enjoyable as excursions into rough terrain. The all-terrain all-rounder also receives a further comfort feature: Keyless Open and Start. The driver does not need to actively press the button on his car key to open or lock his car. He just keeps the key in his pocket or bag and presses the small button on any door handle to enable or disable access to the passenger and cargo compartments of his vehicle. The vehicle’s start / ignition interface is also keyless.
