Together with the display of the Quattroporte Sport GT S Maserati and its Russian distributor Mercury present, as a world premiere, the new GranCabrio Sport which adopts the latest innovations of style, engine and mechanics recently unveiled on the GranTurismo model at 2012 Geneva Auto Show.
Maserati GranTurismo Sport
The GranTurismo Sport improves on Maseratis tradition of offering rich sporting character and high performance while also delivering comfort for four adults and effortless elegance and sophistication.
An evolution of the GranTurismo S and the GranTurismo S Automatic, the GranTurismo Sport delivers a range of technical features that enhance its sporty character, both inside and out.
The GranTurismo Sport has been designed to stand out from the coupe market with aerodynamically efficient design upgrades derived from the MC Stradale.
Since its launch at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, around 15,000 GranTurismos have been delivered all over the world.
Last year the 2700 GranTurismo sales accounted for 44% of Maseratis total. The United States was once again the leading market with almost 900 GranTurismos sold in 2011, followed by China and Italy.
Maserati GranCabrio Sport
With this world premiere the new GranCabrio Sport reinforce its presence in the market of convertible cars with a completely new external style and a more powerful engine. A new front bumper, with a redesigned profile to improve both the aesthetic look as well as the functional aspects, new headlights, a new even more powerful engine and a redesigned suspension system make the new GranCabrio Sport the new reference in the world wide market of convertibles cars.
Exterior Design
Already one of the most celebrated designs in the sports car world, the restyling of the GranCabrio Sports bodywork perfectly blends hints of the GranTurismo Sport and of MC Stradale.
One of the most noticeable areas of change is the GranCabrio Sports new headlight design. While it retains the external shape of the headlights, they now carry all-new setup, including the addition of Daytime Running Light LED technology.
Interior Design
The steering wheel adopts a new design and is now more ergonomic and combined to the elongated Trofeo design paddles and lightweight aluminum pedals better suite to sports driving, thanks to a flatter rim and an accentuated grip profile.
New interior materials in EcoChrome grey and the Poltrona Frau leather upholstery added to existing features such as the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel and the aluminum pedals.
Engine
With a thoroughly modern V8 engine that has already become a classic, the GranCabrio Sport takes advantage of advances in engineering to deliver extra power and torque.
It introduces important changes to both the engines software and its hardware to lift power by up to 10CV and torque by up to 10Nm with no fuel consumption or emissions penalties.
The GranCabrio Sport will produce 338kW (460CV) of power at 7000rpm and a meaty 520Nm of torque, peaking at 4750rpm.
Automatic Transmission (MC Auto Shift)
The ZF-built six-speed Automatic transmission with MC Auto Shift perfectly match the extra performance from the V8 powerhouse and has been derived from the transmission in the GranTurismo Sport. The Automatic transmission is attached directly to the rear of the engine and sends torque to the same limited-slip differential through a two-piece, steel drive shaft.
Its a transmission containing a wide array of features that have been proven in other Maserati models, including five available operating modes. It can be operated in Auto-Normal, Auto-Sport, Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport and Ice modes.
In Manual modes, the driver controls the gearshifts directly with the steering column-mounted gearshift paddles and the car operates as a true manual gearbox, holding each gear until it receives input from the driver. In Manual-Normal mode, the driver can shift until the redline while in Manual-Sport mode, the transmission will hold the gear until the driver changes, even if that means the engine hitting its rev limiter.
In Sport mode, the GranCabrio Sport also contains the super-fast mode developed directly from the GranTurismo Sport and Quattroporte Sport GT S is capable of a faster gearshift time up to 50%.
This mode includes automatic blipping on the downshift along with a Launch Control system, called the MC Start Strategy (which only functions with the MSP switched off).
Using the MC Start Strategy, drivers should hold the brake pedal down, press the accelerator until the engine reaches the optimum launch rpm (between 2300-2500rpm) and release the brake pedal. Using this fast-starting system, the GranCabrio Sport will hit 100km/h in only 5.0 seconds. The top speed achieved is 285 km/h.
Chassis / Suspension
The GranCabrio Sport has been engineered to give its occupants greater ride comfort than ever before, while also providing even more responsiveness in performance driving.
Delivering a superb ride as well as extreme sporting grip and handling, it gives the GranCabrio Sport an all-round ability found in very few sports convertibles.
To achieve this, it uses Sport Skyhook damping, the latest evolution of Maseratis damping control system. Sport Skyhook constantly adapts the GranCabrio Sports damping to suit the road surface beneath the GranCabrio Sports tyres. Combined with a new, 12% more rigid, rear stabilizer bar, the Sport Skyhook system can increase the GranCabrio Sports vertical stiffness by 10 percent in Sport mode.
Quattroporte Sport GT S
The Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S sets another milestone in terms of sportiness in the high performance luxury sedan segment. Conceived and developed as a real driving machine distinguished as of a luxury sedan, the Quattroporte Sport GT S is the ultimate expression of Maseratis sportiness in the Quattroporte range.
The uniqueness of the car in its segment is denoted by some important features.
First of all, the new engine with updated performance (450 CV, 510 Nm, 287 km/h top speed and 5.0 s for the 0-100 km/h acceleration) that takes on Quattroporte the experience done on the MC Stradale.
Secondly, it features the latest evolution of sporty automatic gear-shifting software, designed to seduce committed and demanding drivers, seeking an exciting driving experience.
The Quattroporte Sport GT S furthermore truly offers sporty handling thanks to a suspension set-up which further enhances the Quattroportes already optimal dynamic balance. The Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S is targeted at those customers who demand the unparalleled handling of a thoroughbred sports car even in a luxury sedan.
Last but not least, it is equipped with a sports exhaust which, by means of the Sport button, makes it possible to deploy the full power of the engine and produce an impressive and throaty exhaust note.
