Today, at Stellantis’ stunning Proving Ground in Balocco (VC), a media drive was held to celebrate the return of the Lancia Brand to the rally world. One of the most famous tracks for motorsport innovation and the fine-tuning of high-performance models, the Balocco Proving Ground hosted another high-octane event a few weeks ago in which the Stellantis CEO, and seasoned driver, Carlos Tavares, test drove the Ypsilon Rally4 HF.
Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano states: “2025 will mark the return of Lancia to motorsport as we aim to reestablish our presence in contemporary motorsport competitions. With a mix of tradition and innovation, Lancia looks to the future with passion and ambition. With 2026 set to be the year of the Gamma flagship, which will be produced in Stellantis’ Melfi factory, 2025 is dedicated to the return of the haloed HF name, which will first make an appearance on the Ypsilon and later show up on the Gamma and the new Delta with the “HF Integrale” label. Whenever the HF gets mentioned, one can’t help but recall the legendary Stratos, 037, and Delta, which dominated rally racing for 20 years, winning a total 15 World Championships in Drivers’ and Constructors’ competitions—a record which has yet to be broken. We have always been leaders in motorsport and rally, but now, with the trademark elegance and simplicity which sets us apart, we are making a comeback to Rally 4, the developmental category for tomorrow’s professional drivers, as we look to improve upon our past with passion and pride.”
Lancia is getting ready to write a new chapter in its history with the introduction of the Ypsilon Rally4 HF and the new Ypsilon HF, both of which were introduced last May. The first vehicle has been designed for racing with a three-cylinder, 1.2 Turbo engine which includes 212 HP and a 5-speed mechanical transmission with a mechanical limited-slip differential. The front-wheel-drive configuration guarantees agility and high performance, making it ideal for young drivers who want to make a name for themselves. The category in which the fundamentals of the sport are honed, Rally 4 category represents pure passion and the first step for tomorrow’s champions. Moreover, debuting with the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, the “Trofeo Lancia Rally” will take place across 6 races of the 2025 Italian Rally Championship, with the individual-race and end-of-season winnings totaling around €300,000. The trophy’s champ will then have chance to drive the Lancia Corse HF team’s official Ypsilon Rally 4 HF in the 2026 European Rally Championship.
Eugenio Franzetti has been placed at the helm of Lancia Corse HF thanks to his vast experience in the world of motorsport. Here is what he had to say about this vehicle which came to life out of a collaboration between Lancia and Stellantis Motorsport: “The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF is an homage to the history of Lancia in Rally. Compact, fast, and incredibly enjoyable to drive, it has been designed to provide thrills and excitement, just like the legendary 60s’ Fulvia Coupé HF. After all, the vehicle was created for those who want to feel our legacy of courage, innovation, and victory when they get behind the wheel. We are in the final fine-tuning stages, with homologation expected for January 1, 2025, and we plan on delivering the first models at the end of January.”
Starting today, the fierce Ypsilon Rally 4 can be ordered through the Stellantis Motorsport Racing Shop and is available at €74,500.
Meanwhile, the Ypsilon HF is the high-performance road version of the first vehicle from the brand’s new era and features a 100% electric, 280-HP engine. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, the Ypsilon HF combines superior performance with a design inspired by the most radical vehicles from Lancia’s past, including a lowered suspension and a widened wheel track. This version showcases the brand’s renewed commitment to the production of powerful and thrilling vehicles which combine sustainability and innovation.
For the fine-tuning of both models, the brand looked to Miki Biasion, a true motorsports legend who, between the 80s and 90s, became inextricably linked to Lancia and went on to become the most successful Italian driver in history. Moreover, the track is an important testing ground for improving the technology and safety on all of the series’ vehicles. In the case of the New Ypsilon, the Veneto-born champ reserved particular praise for this “transfer” which allowed the Lancia model to sets itself apart in terms of reactivity, comfort, and quietness both on windy hill courses and city roads. Behind the iconic Delta of the Martini Racing team, Biasion won the 1988 and 1989 World Championships, helping Lancia become the most successful brand ever with ten World Constructors’ Championships, three Constructors’ and Endurance World Championships, one 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florio, and one Carrera Panamericana.
Ricorda Biasion states: “If you dreamt of track as a child, you dreamt of the red of a Ferrari. However, if you dreamt of becoming a rally driver, then you dreamt of Lancia. I am honored to have worked together with the Lancia and Stellantis Motorsport teams in fine-tuning the Ypsilon HF and Ypsilon Rally 4. I hope to inspire all the young drivers who hit the road with our Lancia Ypsilon Rally 4 HF to become professionals and future champions. The Lancia legacy of victories and racing is back and I am happy to be a part of it.”
At the start of the conference, Luca Napolitano took time to express his heartfelt thanks to the Ypsilon, an iconic model which led to 14 years of extraordinary success. Its production has come to an end and all of the vehicles have been sold, marking the end of an important era and, simultaneously, opening a new phase for Lancia with the debut of the New Ypsilon. This courageous yet fundamental decision is part of Lancia’s mission to strengthen Stellantis’ premium lineup in Europe in collaboration with the Alfa Romeo and DS brands.
Since September, the entire Lancia team has been fully concentrated on the New Ypsilon, the first vehicle of the brand’s new era, which is garnering immense acclaim from the public and international press. In Italy, the launch phase of the new model is nearly complete across the 160 Casa Lancia, the new and exclusive showrooms which express the brand’s new corporate identity. At the Casa Lancia across the country, thousands of visitors have had the chance to both get to know the complete lineup—including the Ypsilon, LX, and Cassina trims, all of which are available in electric and hybrid configurations—and partake in thrilling test drives to experience the vehicles’ unparalleled capabilities in terms of handling, efficiency, and performance. To date, 10,000 orders have already been made for the new model since its launch.
The numbers back up the strategy’s success. For example, 60% of the customers get behind the wheel of Lancia for the first time, many of whom came from other premium brands. Furthermore, 60% of them are men, as they appreciate the vehicle’s larger size compared to a classic city-car, which is enough for it to become the home’s only car. No less interesting, one out of every four Ypsilon sold is a top-of-the-range Cassina version, meaning that 25% of new Lancia customers opt for the best in terms of elegance, exclusivity, and quality on board. Moreover, first-time customers are especially struck by the vehicle’s handling and precise steering, quietness, interiors and SALA system. The model even recently won the coveted “Icon Design Trophy” at the Prisa Motor Awards—the prestigious event organized by one of the most important Spanish media groups.
Furthermore, even though the Italian market has yet to fully embrace the transition to electric, the full-electric New Ypsilon has been two times as fast at making in-roads with respect to the current overall trend. The hybrid version has performed even better: a best-seller with a 90% sales mix.
Finally, the brand’s internalization process is running full speed ahead, as laid out in Stellantis’ “Dare Forward” plan, which aims at making Lancia a desirable, respected, and trustworthy brand within the European premium market. This solid and ambitious roadmap plans on reaching its future customers through an initial network of 70 new showrooms in 70 major European cities. For instance, just a few weeks ago, eight new showrooms were inaugurated in the Belgium-Luxembourg region, with two more Casa Lancia planned to open by the end of the year in the same countries. During the same period, the brand opened five new showrooms in strategic positions in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Zwolle. Additionally, the process is also underway in France, where 25 showrooms will be opened by 2025 (15 by 2024), and Spain, where the first 10 showrooms are being opened, with another 10 Casa Lancia to join in 2025—the year the brand will land in Germany as well.
Lancia restarts from Rally 4 and inaugurates the Trofeo Lancia Rally
Lancia makes its returns to the Rally world in the category where the fundamentals of the competition are honed: Rally 4, the heart and soul of Rally competitions, where young drivers are fueled by passion as they vie to become tomorrow’s professionals. In Europe, Rally 4 is one of the most jam-packed categories thanks to its high speeds and thrilling races. Experienced drivers also take part in the competitions, even if it is mainly a developmental category for those who want to learn and grow. Thus, in perfect Lancia style, and in keeping with the brand’s mission and DNA, it is a new beginning marked by ambition, pragmatism, and humility. After all, to this day, Lancia remains the most successful brand of all time in the world of rally, with 15 World Rally Championships, three Constructors’ and Endurance World Championships, one 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florio, and one Carrera Panamericana. With a legacy of success and victory, Lancia is restarting from Rally with an incredibly talented team led by Eugenio Franzetti, Director of Lancia Corse HF. As part of its return to racing, Lancia is also announcing the creation of the “Trofeo Lancia Rally” for drivers competing behind the wheel of the new Ypsilon Rally 4 HF. Taking place across six races in the Italian Rally Championship, the Trofeo Lancia Rally features three age brackets: Junior (up to 25), Master (from 25 to 35), and Expert (over 35).
Registration costs €2,500 per crew and is all-inclusive, providing Lancia technical race gear, hospitality available within the competition area, a spare parts service at the service park, the assurance of a clear guidelines respected by everyone involved, and lastly the immense publicity that Corse Lancia team will give to the trophy and its competitors. Between the individual-race and year-end winnings, the prize money amounts to around €300,000. Furthermore, the trophy’s champ will have the chance to compete in the 2026 European Rally Championship with Team Lancia Corse HF’s official Ypsilon Rally 4 HF. The first date of the Trofeo Lancia Rally will coincide with the second competition of the Italian Rally Championship.
Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, a sublime team effort
Inspired by the legendary ‘60s Fulvia Coupé HF, with which it shares its front-wheel-drive configuration, reduced dimensions, and the intense thrills of high-speed driving, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF was created out of the collaboration between Lancia, the most successful brand in the rally world, and the Stellantis Motorsport team, which boasts 11 victories at Dakar and 27 Constructors’ titles in the World Championship Rally. The vehicle has been further enhanced through prestigious partnerships between Lancia and some of the most famous premium brands in the automotive and racing world, including Marelli, the Italian brand which handled the engine management system; Sparco for the safety roll-bar, the seats, and the steering wheel; TM Tecnologie for the braking system; Speedline for the alloy wheels; and Supersprint for the exhaust. The European companies involved include SADEV, which created the gearbox, and Ohlins, which provided the shock absorbers. Furthermore, Miki Biasion, the world champion racer, contributed to the development of this car which is bringing Lancia back to the world of racing. Currently, it is in the final fine-tuning stages and the aim is to achieve homologation by January 1, 2025 and deliver the first models at the end of January. Today is a key moment on this busy roadmap with the official opening of orders around the world through the Stellantis Motorsport Racing Shop at a price of €74,500. Specifically, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF features the CMP platform in the MHEV version—used for the first time by Stellantis Motorsport and different from the one on the Group’s other Rally 4 vehicles. The trellis-shaped welded-tube roll cage has been built on top the new platform, creating a lighter and more powerful chassis. Furthermore, the new Lancia race car features the 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder, 4-valve-per-cylinder PureTech Turbo engine with modified turbines and exhaust, and a specific engine management system to deliver 212 HP of maximum power. It is a highly powerful and reliable engine which is also extremely cheap in terms of cost per kilometer—an essential for Rally 4 drivers. The weight to power ratio is extremely attractive, making the vehicle extremely fast. Equipped with a SADEV 5-speed dog ring gearbox and mechanical limited-slip differential, the high-performance model is the ideal solution for rally fans who want to enjoy themselves, as well as a serious option for drivers aiming to achieve victory in Rally 4 and two-wheel-drive competitions. Furthermore, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF features 330 mm front ventilated disc brakes in the track configuration, which guarantee powerful braking and allow for off-throttle braking—a must in rallies, especially Italian ones where one constantly encounters climbs and descents. Ohlin three-way, adjustable shock absorbers were chosen for the McPherson suspensions to allow drivers to fine-tune them to their own driving style. Lastly, it should be highlighted that, in addition to the HF logo, the historic “LANCIA CORSE HF” signature returns on the Lancia Ypsilon Rally 4. Inspired by the historic version, the new logo is a contemporary reinterpretation which looks towards the future in accordance with Lancia’s Renaissance. The CORSE lettering now features an ad-hoc font. The logo’s graphic design with its slanted look seeks to express the racing world’s concept of speed, creating stylistic consistency with the form of the HF logo. The black and white colors also call back to the original ones. The logo can be used both in a horizontal and vertical orientation.
Lancia Ypsilon HF, the thrill of the track on the road
The Lancia Ypsilon HF expresses the brand's most competitive and high-performance spirit. Lancia is once again inspired by its past, revisiting it to look ahead to the future with great ambition. Powered by a 100% electric 280-hp engine, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, the Lancia Ypsilon HF will feature lowered suspension, a widened wheel track and assertive, muscular shapes, inspired by the most radical iconic cars that made history for the brand, with the shapes and design in the name of performance. The car will debut on the market by spring of next year. After the Lancia Ypsilon HF, the Gamma and Delta will also come in an HF Integrale version.
Furthermore, returning to stand out on the Lancia Ypsilon HF, the HF logo is the historic signature of high-performance Lancia models, originally introduced during the 1960 Geneva Motor Show, when a group of passionate Lancia car owners founded the “Lancia Hi-Fi” (‘High Fidelity’) club, an exclusive meeting point for the brand's most loyal customers and especially for people who had purchased at least six new Lancia cars. The HF logo then became a hallmark of the HF Squadra Corse Lancia, founded in 1963 by Cesare Fiorio together with drivers and passionate owners of Lancia cars, and was used as the ‘signature’ for many of the brand's victories. The historic logo was made up of HF in white capital letters on a black background, with four red running elephants underscored by the wording “SQUADRA CORSE” in white on red. The little elephant was chosen as a lucky charm, based on the legend that once let loose, these creatures are unstoppable, making them a symbol of performance and driving pleasure. Unveiled in March in its revisited version, the new HF logo reinterprets its historical counterpart with a contemporary flair: all the constituent elements of the brand symbolize Lancia tradition and are now simplified in terms of lines and shapes in a new balance that expresses innovation, premiumness, and the Italian spirit, with a touch of eclecticism in full respect of the brand's unmistakable geometries.
Miki Biasion, a World Rally legend
Miki Biasion is an icon in the history of motorsport, having contributed to making Lancia the most successful brand of all time, with ten World Constructors’ Championships, three Endurance World Championships, one 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florio, and one Carrera Panamericana.
Biasion made his debut in Lancia colors at the wheel of the Rally 037 Gr. B. In 1983, the year he competed in and won the Italian and European championships. From 1986, he only raced in rallies included in the world championship: in his first year, he took the Delta S4 to victory in Argentina. Results improved even further in the next season; his five victories in 1988 included his first world title with the Delta Integrale Gr. A. In 1989, Biasion joined the ranks of two-time world champions, and in both years also won the Safari Rally in Africa, the only Italian ever to have done so.
Biasion therefore inextricably linked his name to this brand in the 1980s and ’90s, becoming the most successful Italian driver of all time, having driven the Martini Racing Team’s iconic Delta to triumph in the 1988 and 1989 World Championships.
The New Ypsilon, the forerunner of Lancia’s new era
The sinuous shapes of the New Lancia Ypsilon are inspired by the models that have made history for the brand, just like the round taillights, a clear reference to the Lancia Stratos, and the iconic “chalice” on the front, now revisited in three beams of LED light. Not to mention the fact that the New Lancia Ypsilon is the first Stellantis production car with the S.A.L.A. system, the smart virtual interface that ensures a comfortable driving experience in line with Lancia’s effortless technology. The Italian brand's new creation is also best-in-class in the premium hatchback B-segment, courtesy of the most comprehensive specifications in its category: a large 10.25” display, the best standard parking aid system, and the greatest exterior lighting system in terms of technology and extent. It is also the only model in the segment equipped with Level 2 Autonomous Driving as standard on the Cassina version. The line-up consists of three versions for three different types of customers: the elegant New Lancia Ypsilon, dedicated to younger customers; the New Lancia Ypsilon LX, the highest spec and fullest version; the New Lancia Ypsilon Edizione Cassina, for those who want to feel at home in the car. Each trim level of the New Lancia Ypsilon refers to the elegant yet sustainable concept of feeling at home, in perfect Lancia style, culminating in the exclusive New Lancia Ypsilon Edizione Cassina, the epitome of design, comfort, and well-being. Every version in the line-up is available in electric and hybrid configurations, making the model a segment leader in terms of versatility, efficiency, and respect for the environment. Specifically, the hybrid version is powered by a latest-generation hybrid engine, with a 100-hp (74-kW) 1.2-liter engine and 3-cylinder 48V technology, pairing maximum efficiency with the utmost reliability. Conversely, the 100% electric version embodies the brand’s vision in terms of range, charging time and efficiency for segment-leading performance. The model is equipped with a 156-hp/115-kW power unit and a 51-kWh battery, to ensure a range of up to 403 km (WLTP combined cycle) and fast charging in 24 minutes (from 20% to 80%) or enough for 100 km in 10 minutes. The New Lancia Ypsilon is also an agile, dynamic car that can maintain remarkable grip and stability on the road and is at the same time equipped with great comfort, guaranteeing a level of absolute premiumness. Specifically, in terms of driving pleasure, the design and production team has widened the wheel track by 24 mm, to ensure better weight distribution and handling for the new model. The steering system has also been calibrated for the utmost driving precision, and work has been done to obtain a specific setup for the suspension, more dynamic but never too stiff.
