TWO FIAT ABARTH CHALLENGERS IN THE 1000 MIGLIA RALLY WITH THE OFFICIAL PUNTO ENTRIES DRIVEN BY ANDREUCCI AND BASSO
The 1000 Miglia Rally, scheduled in Brescia from April 7-9th, will see Fiat Abarth take up the challenge on two fronts. In fact the Brescia race is the first appointment in the 2005 European Rally Championship, in which Fiat Abarth will participate with the official team of Giandomenico Basso and navigator Mitia Dotta in the Fiat Punto, and it's also the second race in the Italian Championship for the Fiat Abarth team, Paolo Andreucci and navigator Anna Andreussi. Two challenges that emphasise Fiat's official return to this speciality for which the brand has important and ambitious plans. And not only will the 2005 season see official participation of the Fiat Punto Abarths in the European and Italian Championships, the team is competing in the World Junior Championship too.
While the World and Italian Championships are already underway, the 1000 Miglia Rally will be the opening race in the European event.
Tuscan driver Andreucci, 2003 Italian champion in the Fiat Punto Abarth, will be lining up for this second event in the Italian Championship, which got underway with the Ciocco Rally on March 11-12th. Andreucci-Andreussi completed what turned out to be an extremely demanding race because of the treacherous weather conditions, driving the Punto Abarth to victory in the Super 1600 car class (ahead of Renault entries driven by Travaglia and Bizzarri) and finishing in fourth place overall.
Drivers entered for the 2005 Fiat Abarth Trophy will also be in the line-up at the 29th 1000 Miglia Rally: 5 Fiat Punto Super 1600 entries (Medici-Benedetti, Colombini-Guglielmini, Pozzi-Curto, Manzini-Salvadori and Bernardelli-Milanesi), 3 Fiat Stilo Abarths (Sottosanti-Cantori, Pesticcio-Sturla and Bordignon-Di Cagno) and 2 with the Fiat Punto HGT’s (Cacciavellani-Piccinin and Angrisani-Pascale). Provisional standings in the Trophy see Filippo Bordignon (258 points) in the lead, followed by Denis Colombini (248 points) and Francesco Pozzi and Paolo Sottosanti (equal third with 180 points).
The schedule for the 29th 1000 Miglia Rally, which has been changed in order to pay tribute to Pope John Paul II whose funeral will be held on Friday, April 8th, will be run over two legs (Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th) including 13 special trials. The official start of the event will be on Thursday, April 7th at 6.30 p.m. with a parade in Brescia's Piazza della Loggia, then no racing on Friday, April 8th (with the cars in a closed paddock), and a final arrival on Sunday, April 10th at 2.45 p.m.
