Round 10 of Season 11 in Formula E proved to be an intense and hard-fought encounter at the Shanghai circuit. And those who were up early on Saturday certainly weren’t disappointed! It was action from start to finish on the international circuit close to the Chinese metropolis, with drivers squabbling for position all the way to the chequered flag.
The weekend started perfectly for DS Automobiles and Maximilian Günther. The German driver was imperious throughout the duels to claim pole position, before stamping his authority on the race to take his second win of the year for the French premium constructor. With strong pace, perfect performance from the DS E-TENSE FE25, and an optimal strategy, everything came together in the first of two races this weekend.
Jean-Éric Vergne staged a great fightback. The Frenchman was 10th on the grid and bided his time patiently to climb up the leaderboard at the end of the race. In the final few corners of the last lap, he went from fourth to second place thanks to some superb overtaking: cementing a stunning one-two finish for DS PENSKE.
Both DS Automobiles drivers have made significant progress in the drivers’ classification courtesy of this important result. Maximilian Günther is now placed fifth, ahead of his team mate Jean-Éric Vergne. DS PENSKE has also capitalised on its score in the teams’ championship to move into a provisional third overall, just 55 points off the lead.
With China hosting a double-header this weekend, the 11th round of the season will also take place at the Shanghai International circuit on Sunday, with the race start scheduled for 07:00 AM CET.
Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director:
“This opening day was simply perfect and one that we will never forget. Our one-two here writes a real chapter in both the history of the sport and the DS Automobiles brand. The team put together an ideal strategy and our two drivers drove the two DS E-TENSE FE25 cars like champions. This win is deserved by absolutely everyone in our team, as they have all worked so hard. Now we will concentrate on tomorrow’s race.”
Maximilian Günther:
“What a day! Qualifying couldn’t have gone any better and starting from pole obviously gave us a good advantage. But of course we knew it would then be a long race. All the planets finally aligned and we were able to win in style! I’m very grateful to the whole team. This one-two means so much for all of us, as it’s the result of a lot of previous hard work, as well as all the different processes we have put in place.”
Jean-Éric Vergne, 2018 and 2019 Formula E champion:
“We’ve just experienced an absolutely amazing race! This is an incredible result for the team. I’m very happy with the way that I was able to come back up through the field and finish second. I’m also very proud of the team for all the work they have done. It’s a really immense privilege to live through times like these.”
