Hackathon in Rüsselsheim: Stellantis and AWS work on virtual platform for continuous software development for automotive
  • Successful hackathon of the joint Stellantis and Amazon Web Services team
  • Independent of location and hardware: Faster software development possible
  • Virtualization and hybridization of control unit integration and simulation in the AWS Cloud

RÜSSELSHEIM, March 10, 2023 – At a hackathon in Rüsselsheim, software experts from Stellantis, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and other strategic partners made great progress. "Our AWS Workbench will enable all our developers and partner teams to provision within minutes a complete workspace including tooling and virtualized hardware and just start building automotive software for our customers," said Heiko Schilling, SVP Global Software Engineering Stellantis SWX.

For one week, around 70 software experts from Stellantis and AWS – the preferred cloud partner of Stellantis for vehicle platforms – worked together on this cloud-based product development environment called "Virtual Engineering Workbench" (VEW). “Thanks to the hackathon format, results could be achieved within a few days that would otherwise have taken several weeks”, said Marco Sänger, Vice President/ E2E Integration V&V and DevOps.

Thanks to the VEW, in the future software engineers from any Stellantis software hub can start building vehicle software in a continuous integration, testing, and validation setup, from anywhere in the world. So, for example, a real driver assistance camera could be linked and simulated together with a virtual electronic power steering. The logistical and purely physical processes usually took days or even weeks and took place in the classic environment between the supplier and the automobile manufacturer.

This makes the VEW an integral part of the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, in which Software plays a key role on the company’s way to become industry leaders in terms of customer experience in services and products. The software-driven strategy of Stellantis deploys next-generation tech platforms, building on existing connected vehicle capabilities to transform how customers interact with their vehicles, and to generate approximately €20 billion in incremental annual revenues by 2030.

The plan includes the creation of a Data and Software Academy to retrain more than 1,000 people per year and to hire software talents with a global approach. Stellantis will also train developers and engineers in AWS-related cloud technologies to accelerate its transformation into a data-driven enterprise in the cloud.

A team of 4,500 people is targeted by 2024 in several software hubs worldwide. One of the currently eight centers is located in Rüsselsheim.

The task of Software Hub in Germany is research and development in the areas of software, artificial intelligence and connectivity. One team focusses on the topic auf the hackathon: The Virtual Engineering Workbench. It provides automotive engineers with a cloud-enabled high-performance computing environment for the agile development of the three Stellantis key technology platforms STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive.

In 2022, Stellantis and Amazon Web Services announced a cooperation to build - among other things – the next generation of cloud-enabled infrastructure for vehicle platforms, including for STLA SmartCockpit.
