Fiat is awarded for environmental management in Minas Gerais

Fiat Automóveis was the winner of Prêmio Mineiro de Gestão Ambiental (PMGA) [Environmental Management Award in the State of Minas Gerais], cycle 2013, promoted by União Brasileira para a Qualidade (UBQ) [Brazilian Union for Quality]. The award was granted to the Manufacture Officer of Fiat Chrysler for Latin America, Alfredo Leggero, by the coordinator of Pnuma in Brazil, Denise Hamú, in conjunction with the idealizer of PMGA, Ronaldo Simão, the State Secretary of the Environment, Alceu José Torres Marques, and the head of Communication and Promotion of the Sustainable Growth division of the Department of Economics and Social Affairs of the UN, Nikhil Chandavarkar. The ceremony was held on May 20, in Belo Horizonte.

This is the fifth time Fiat wins the award. “Winning the PMGA again is an indicator that the company is in the right direction. In the past years, we have progressed a lot towards the inclusion of sustainability in the strategic map of the company, and the development of a system of indicators constantly monitored”, stressed Leggero.

To Fiat, the economic and technological development must be aligned with practices constantly focused on ensuring environmental care. As result of a management focused on the prevention and reduction of environmental impacts, Fiat was the first manufacturer of light and passenger vehicles in the country to achieve ISO 14001, in 1997. In 2013, the company reached another important landmark: ISO 50001, for power management. Fiat Automóveis was the first manufacturer in the country with this certification.

“The achievement of ISO 50001 was the result of continuous investments towards the improvement of the energetic performance of the Betim plant. The power saved in 2012 and 2013 would be sufficient to supply 610 thousand residences. With this reduction, nine thousand tons of CO2 were not emitted”, stressed the officer.

To be awarded, Fiat underwent three evaluation stages: eligibility, when the companies with conformities in the environmental area are selected; evaluation of the management and visit reports, when the management practices and results in the past three years are examined; and decision by the board, formed by 20 professionals of great relevance in the environmental, academic, and corporate areas.

The methodology is validated by the United Nations (UN), by the Government of Minas Gerais and by the União Brasileira para a Qualidade (UBQ). “The PMGA is an award of major relevance and seriousness, by promoting a deep analysis of different sectors, which helps us in acknowledging the best practices, stimulating sustainable actions in the industry of Minas Gerais”, completed Leggero.
