São Paulo, May 30, 2017
Style, Technology, Comfort, Performance, Sportiveness and Safety. More than six words, these are six attributes that define the Fiat Argo, a model that sustains and gives even more force to the new phase of Fiat in the hatchback segment in the Brazilian market.
In its more than 40 years in Brazil, Fiat has become known for developing products that are highly connected to consumer desires, especially in the compact hatchback segment. From the pioneer Fiat 147 to the latest Mobi, several dynasties of hatchback sales champions have succeeded, such as the various generations of Uno and Palio, or the award-winning Punto.
Reflecting this successful trajectory, but tuned to the most modern market trends, design and technology, Fiat introduces a surprising model in the segment of greater volume in the market: Fiat Argo. More than a compact hatchback, it presents itself as a true premium experience within the category.
The consumer of this segment does not make concessions; he has high level of requirement with his car for daily use. And for a large part of this audience, this car needs to be a not so compact hatchback, which is very close to the middle segment. This buyer demands style, comfort, security, space, practicality and a lot of connectivity. Argo is Fiat's answer to this new trend: a compact hatchback on the outside, but very spacious inside, equipped and with exquisite style. A truly aspirational and intelligent car for this consumer. You do not drive, you feel, Fiat Argo.
Fiat Argo is the result of a major investment by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) in the modernization of the Polo Automotivo de Betim (Minas Gerais), with a focus on constructive excellence. It represents a new cycle of renewal in the implemented Fiat range, after a period where the brand invested in segments where it was not present, such as the larger pickup trucks (Toro) and subcompact hatchbacks (Mobi).
DESIGN TEAMS UP EMOTION AND TECHNOLOGY
From the union between the technology capable of stamping the most refined surfaces and the emotion of the handmade sculpture, Fiat Argo is born. With a design full of Italian soul, it brings balance in proportions, elegance in detail and the sportiveness so desired in a hatchback.
The “wrap around” concept experienced earlier in Fiat Toro now moves more restless, almost nervous, so all the excitement of a hatchback can be perceived by insinuating lines.
On the front, the long, bulky hood demonstrates its imposing presence. The headlights that invade the side with dynamism are bi-parabole with LED that leave a remarkable signature and a technological look. The grid is no longer a simple element of covering the internal parts of the engine to become a three-dimensional object, rich in details. This is a modern line of automotive design, also seen in premium segment models and in European supersports.
The underside visually reinforces the width of the car with the air intakes sculpted at the ends of the bumper. The visual effect is immediate, with the increase in “size-impression” and the perception of balance in the forms.
They stand out in the bulky drawing the anabolized wheel boxes, with muscles under the line of waist that contours the whole hatchback. The wide wheelbase made it possible to explore the way the light moves around the car, creating an effect of light and shadow that accentuates tension and spiritedness. The result is a dynamic, sensual and attractive sculpture. Argo, even stopped, transpires movement and sportsmanship.
At the rear, the lights have fragmented and modern design, with format “C” pointing to the center of the FIAT logo and supporting carved into the side of the back cover. The sports bumper, with its aerodynamic extractor, emphasizes the jovial character of the car, while at the same time guaranteeing lightness to the whole.
INTERIOR REFINEMENT
The essence of the Fiat brand has always translated into passion and sportsmanship, and these two elements guided the creative process from inside the Fiat Argo. The design team by means of the big cities’ architecture has found inspiration to create the guide lines for the hatchback.
The panel inspires amplitude and beauty through its composition in three levels, with surrounding elements. The adoption of a 7-inch, floating-point multimedia screen catches the eye immediately, as well as the beautiful layout of the functional areas (buttons, air conditioning and air vents).
The slim, lightweight appearance of the panel is complemented by the details: in the top layer, the side air vents directed towards the occupants, the integration between the panel and doors and the leaked cover of the instrument panel.
In the middle layer, the painted strip incorporates the three central air vents, inspired by FCA sportscars icons. At the bottom, the central control in the concept “piano key” is another item that confers modernity and novelty in its segment. This concept maintains the lightness of the panel with ergonomics worthy of upper segments.
The central console had the layout worked out specifically for each type of exchange. In addition to easy access to the USB port and auxiliary input. Rear seat passengers are equipped with a slide holder, a cup holder and a full USB port, which includes data transfer.
The door panel has an armrest covered in fabric integrated with the handle. The seats have increased the comfort and quality of the finish, with larger volumes and restraints. Finally, the steering wheel, which translates to the sportiness of the Fiat Argo, bringing elements of the race universe, such as slightly thicker grip, support for the thumbs, flat base and central band on the top.
UNPARALLELED SAFETY IN THE SEGMENT
Fiat Argo stands out in this item, introducing equipment previously present only in the segment of medium-sized hatchback. Among the items that extend the safety on board are the front side airbags and the rear camera with dynamic lines and parking sensors. ISOFIX seats, which allow the best attachment of child seats to the body, are standard on all versions of Fiat Argo, as well as the side-flasher repeaters on the rear-view mirrors. But what sets it apart from competitors is in the following list.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – Through a series of sensors, the system ensures the drivability and stability of the car in situations of loss of front or rear. To do this, the wheels are automatically braked selectively, and the engine power can be momentarily decreased, allowing the vehicle to take the correct direction indicated by the steering wheel.
Traction Control (TC) – Item especially useful on steep and slippery ramps. In this situation, the low grip causes the wheels to slip and the vehicle has its movement and steerability compromised. Realizing this, the system automatically and selectively brakes the front wheels and can reduce engine power to increase the adhesion of wheels to the floor and ensure a safe departure and no alarms.
Hill Holder – The ramp starting assistant prevents the car from moving in the exits in steep sections, avoiding collisions. It also operates in parking maneuvers uphill or downhill.
Car body reinforced with high strength steels – Almost the entire body of Fiat Argo uses high strength steels. In particular, the areas that form the occupant survival cell rely on ultra sturdy steels or even hot stamping on the door columns. In comparison with Fiat Punto, Fiat Argo had a 7% increase in torsional rigidity and an 8% increase in flexural stiffness, resulting in increased strength, safety and durability.
AMAZING SPACE, COMFORT AND EQUIPMENT
Fiat Argo lavishes elements that make life on board more pleasant and inviting. In addition to the engaging, ergonomic design and superior grade finish, the hatchback has an extensive list of comfort, practicality and convenience items. And impresses by the use of space in the cabin and in the trunk.
Surprising space – Fiat Argo has the largest cabin of the segment, with 2,806 liters of area. In the category, it is unbeatable in front and rear habitability, and also in head, knee and elbow room. The hatchback has benches that comfortably and comfortably accommodate the occupants, with no tricks to ensure a generous internal space, especially for those who travel in the rear seats. With people of medium stature in the car, those who travel behind can cross their legs and travel comfortably. The 300-liter trunk is rectangular in shape, almost without interference from the wheel housings. The loading area can be considerably enlarged by folding the split rear seats.
Driving position – The driver's seat has height adjustment, while the steering wheel can come with height and depth settings. This combination allows the driver to easily find the best position on board regardless of his physical type.
Steering wheel controls – How about selecting the radio station or favorite music and controlling the operations of the phone without taking your hands off the steering wheel and the eyes of the traffic? This is exactly what the audio and telephone system controls on the steering wheel allow, with direct and intuitive indications. Not to mention the paddle shifters for manual gearshifts in the automatic and automated transmission.
7-inch Uconnect multimedia system – This is the greatest difference in refinement and technology in the Fiat Argo cabin, almost as if a tablet stood out above the dashboard, with great ergonomics and visibility. It has 7-inch multicolor High Definition touch screen. Commands are accessed quickly and extremely intuitively. In addition, the system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps. With them, the commands are made by buttons, ringtones or voice. Just say the name of a song in the playlist for the system to make it available on the car's audio system. With the ability to receive supplementary applications of the user's preference, the multimedia center becomes a complete set of navigation, entertainment and convenience on board.
Instrument cluster with digital display – Using TFT technology for high definition images, the 3.5-inch display has customizable settings according to the driver's preferences. In 1.8-liter models (Precision and HGT), it is twice the size (7 inches). Regardless of the type of screen, the on-board computer is standard on all versions, with detailed information and controls of the car and the driving style. Depending on the configuration, the number of functions available to the driver can reach 70.
Keyless Entry’N’ Go – Extra convenience and convenience by releasing the use of the remote control to unlock the doors and turn the ignition on Fiat Argo. Presence sensors installed on the external front door handles and the luggage compartment lid, added to the ignition button installed inside the cabin, do all the work at the touch of your fingers.
Automatic air-conditioning – For perfect on-board air conditioning with intuitive and efficient digital controls.
Multifunction external rearview mirrors – In addition to the futuristic design that draws attention, the external mirrors bring several features. They can be folded at the touch of a button (Folding function), an useful feature in tight spaces and narrow streets. They also have a courtesy light (Puddle lamps), which illuminates the area where the driver and passenger will step out of the vehicle as soon as the doors are unlocked. This content is also exclusive to Fiat Argo among compact hatchbacks. The right mirror also features a "tilt-down" function, which automatically adjusts to a lower position in reverse.
Electrochromic internal rearview mirror – Fiat Argo can count on dazzle, crepuscular and rain sensors, offered in a package that enhances comfort and safety. The first automatically dims the mirror when a strong light is reflected, avoiding harming the driver's vision. The second automatically switches on the low beams when the external brightness becomes dim. And the third triggers the wipers of the windshield to the first signs of rain.
PERFECT SETUP FOR PLEASURABLE DRIVING
Fiat Argo performance goes far beyond the engines – Firefly in 1-liter three-cylinder and 1.3-liter four-cylinder forms and E.torQ 1.8 Evo VIS with 139 hp. It undergoes a fine adjustment between transmission, steering and suspension, as well as a solid, well-built body and with excellent sound insulation. In the new hatchback, the mechanical tuning has received exquisite treatment in a combination that results in performance, efficience, comfort, safety and driving pleasure. All this with the signature of an engineering area with more than 40 years of tradition in the development of vehicles perfectly adapted to the driving conditions in South America.
The choice of engines is completely aligned to the offered versions of the new Fiat Argo. When the customer looks for more affordable models, fuel consumption is a highly important item. Therefore, Argo Drive with Firefly 1-liter and 1.3-liter engines are the most economical in the segment. Now when the consumer opts for a larger powerplant, it's clear he wants performance and a full stop. And the 1.8-liter Argo delivers, because the E.torQ Evo VIS 1.8 engine offers best-in-class performance.
In fact, and independent of the difficult performance / fuel economy ratio, Argo is a very good car to drive. The Firefly family, both in 1-liter and 1.3-liter forms, offers the best and better distributed torque of the segment, giving agility to the accelerations and resumes of speed, without the need to squeeze the accelerator pedal at all times. The Firefly strength is the result of an intelligent combination of the adoption of two valves per cylinder, the high compression ratio and the minimum rates of internal friction. A technological engine, with high combustion control, is true, but above all a highly efficient intelligent solution in terms of consumption and torque delivery.
The Firefly family was designed based on two pillars: efficiency and reliability. These two bases are the most important for the customer, because they combine the difficult binomial consumption/force. With a two-valve head per cylinder and single valve control on the variable-displacement head, both the 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine and the 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine have the lowest internal power consumption for the valvetrain drive compared to any other four-valve cylinder head. In addition, they offer customers the best torque and low fuel consumption, which in practice is what everyone wants. Without losing the pleasure of driving, quite the contrary, Argo Drive 1.0 and 1.3 bring mark A in the Brazilian Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Labeling Program and are also among the most powerful in the segment. With 3 cylinders and 1 liter, Argo Drive generates 77 hp and 10.9 kgmf of torque with ethanol. The 1.3-liter has 4 cylinders, 109 hp and 14.2 kgmf of torque (ethanol).
When it comes to performance, Argo can rely on the E.torQ Evo VIS and becomes the most powerful in the class. With 139 hp at 5,750 rpm and maximum torque of 19.3 kgfm at 3,750 rpm (both with ethanol), the Precision and HGT models are the most powerful and fastest in the segment. That without losing the liveliness in traffic, thanks to the variable intake manifold, also called VIS (Variable Intake System), which ensures more power at low engine speeds. In practice, there are two intake manifolds in one: up to 4,000 revs, the air goes through the cylinders a longer path, favoring the torque. Above this rotation, a fin is activated and causes the air to travel a shorter path, generating more power. The sporty HGT, for example, can take the Argo to 192 km/h of maximum speed, with an acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in just 9 seconds, the best segment numbers.
Extending the range of options for the customer, three types of transmission are available: five-speed manual, automated GSR Comfort (also with five speeds) and six-speed automatic. Common to all types, precise setups draws the highest power and highest torque at the most varied speeds. All also count the last gear with Overdrive function, which prioritizes the reduction of consumption and noise.
Six-speed automatic gearbox – For the first time, a Brazilian-built Fiat compact passenger car is equipped with six-speed automatic transmission - the same as the Fiat Toro. This state-of-the-art transmission makes for a very balanced marriage with the 139-hp E.torQ 1.8 Evo VIS engine, providing almost imperceptible shifts and reducing cruise speed. This modern gearbox is an ally not only to extract the best performance from the engine, but also to reduce fuel consumption and significantly lower the noise level that reaches the cabin. One of the highlights of this transmission is the Neutral Function, a feature that decouples the engine from the transmission at fast traffic stops, avoiding the sense that the system is forcing the brakes - a measure that also helps reduce fuel consumption.
GSR (Gear Smart Ride) Comfort – This modern automated transmission equips the Drive 1.3 GSR version, combining performance, comfort and economy in an enviable way. Smooth gearshifts coupled with the clever Auto-Up Shift Abort system, which provides more resilient pickups, make the GSR transmission a benchmark in the market. And it always comes with paddle shifts on the steering wheel, for times when the driver wants to impose his style of gear changes.
Start&Stop System – As a standard feature on all Fiat Argo versions, it automatically shuts off the engine when the car is stationary. The benefits are fuel economy and lower emission of pollutants. And all this without compromising safety: sensors only allow the engine to be turned off if there is any kind of commitment, either the vehicle or the occupants. To restart the engine after stopping, simply release the brake pedal in versions with GSR or automatic transmission; already on the versions equipped with manual gearbox, a slight touch on the pedal of the clutch puts again the propeller in operation.
Progressive electrical steering – Without stealing motor power and torque directly, the power-assisted steering provides total precision and lightness when driving Fiat Argo. With quick responses to the driver's commands and superior ease in maneuvering, electric steering is synonymous with technology to service the comfort and convenience on board, and also brings its contribution to fuel economy.
High torque at low revs – Common to the three engines, it is worth noting the high torque at low engine speeds, which results in a nimble and fun-to-drive car. It's that extra hint of sportiness when the engine gets full with little accelerator, making pickups and pickups more agile, pleasurable and safe. In short, it helps reduce fuel consumption.
Chain drive – In place of the traditional toothed belt for the distribution drive, Fiat Argo uses metallic chain in its three propellers. This solution provides greater sturdiness and exchange exemption, ensuring smoother and cheaper maintenance for customers.
No auxiliary tank – The three engines do not require the use of the auxiliary tank, the one that is fueled with gasoline for departure on colder days. An electronic system automatically heats the fuel when the outside temperature is below 16 degrees and there is more than 70% ethanol in the tank.
Suspension calibration – Unbeatable combination of comfort and sportiness, without giving up security. The comfort comes in the form of competent insulation against the imperfections of the floor, which minimizes the vibrations and bumps transmitted to the cabin. The mix of sportsmanship safely delivers a car with quick answers, pleasant to drive, but predictable behavior even in the most severe situations.
Acoustic comfort – The acoustic engineers of Fiat have done an exquisite job of insulation on board Argo, which has the lowest noise levels of the category in any condition of use and any measurement to be made (tire rolling, wind noise and articulation index). The sense of quiet on board is next to na average premium category hatchback.
