After Maximilian Günther’s win on Saturday to lead home a brilliant one-two for DS Automobiles, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship teams and drivers were back on track at the Shanghai circuit on Sunday for the 11th race of Season 11.

Rain dominated proceeding from the very start of the day, and Jean-Éric Vergne was one of the drivers to make the most of the soggy conditions! Having claimed sixth in qualifying, the Frenchman finished fifth after 31 laps of racing. His great performance underlined the efficiency of the DS E-TENSE FE25 under circumstances that were completely different to those of the day before.

The 10 points he scored allowed JEV to break into the top five of the provisional drivers’ classification: one place ahead of his team mate Maximilian Günther, currently sixth in the rankings.

The German was forced to retire from the race on Sunday due to a battery issue: a shared part in common with all the cars. In the teams’ standings, DS PENSKE maintained its provisional third place in the championship secured the day before and enhanced its reputation as a benchmark of the sport, having set a record for points scored this weekend (56 points).

Following a trip to China that fully lived up to all the expectations of DS Automobiles and PENSKE AUTOSPORT, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship next heads to Jakarta. The Indonesian capital will host the 12th round of the season on June 21.

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director:

“The second race at Shanghai was characterised by soaking wet weather, with heavy rain and a very wet track right from qualifying. The race got away behind the Safety Car and was run in extreme conditions, but our two drivers both put in excellent performances. Unfortunately Max then encountered a battery problem, which is a common part shared by all the manufacturers. He was forced to retire as a result, exactly as was the case in Tokyo a few weeks ago. For his part, JEV drove a careful race and ended up with an excellent fifth place, which allowed us to score some precious points. It’s been a very positive weekend for us as a whole, thanks to an amazing and triumphant day on Saturday! This means that we come away from China on the provisional podium of the teams’ and constructors’ championships. Now we focus all our attention on Jakarta, with everything still to play for!”

Maximilian Günther :

“We ‘re obviously disappointed not to see the finish of Sunday’s race due to a battery problem. Having said that, we were having a great race right up to then. We qualified ninth, and were making our way up through the field with strong pace and some good overtaking moves. What happened next is a pity, but it’s all part of motorsport. Above all, we’re going to remember our great result on Saturday: it was truly incredible to secure a one-two finish! We’re also going to hold onto the fact that our performance on Sunday was right up there, and I can’t wait to get to Jakarta now.”

Jean-Éric Vergne, 2018 and 2019 Formula E champion :

“It was a great weekend all told, which bagged us some excellent points. We had a good race today, starting from sixth and finishing fifth. The action at the front of the field was reasonably static, which allowed us to manage our pace and strategy well.”
